For some reason right now tobacco is expensive no matter were you live... I was looking that the grocery store the other night at "Smoker's Pride" Vanilla Cavendish just as a go too... It's very mild with a light aroma (a good all the time smoke if you don't know what you want)... Anyway, it's $19.00 for 12oz... It use to be $14.00... I guess I can still order it on line, but by the time you add shipping...

Thanked: 983I reckon we'd be raped in the end!
Just ordered a 50g tin of that same Top Black Cherry tobacco that Heelaru got in. I don't think we would be able to sneak past the fun police doing that too often, but as a, maybe 3-4 times a year, and small quantity sort of thing, it might work out nicely. It would save just short of $20 Aus a go.
I reckon it'll be good for sampling some tobacco's that wouldn't normally be available locally. We could always tell the tax collector that we are just trying to make a choice before getting the local suppliers to start stocking it I suppose... Might work. Anyway, I think I will be going out to get some locally available BR Cherry Cav to try alongside this Top Black over weekend.

Thanked: 44You Americans have no idea how good you have it with tobacco. Up here, we're so heavily taxed on the stuff that 50g is at least $20, that's 1.76 oz.

Thanked: 983I dunno Tom, but maybe the customs folks your way are strapping young lasses. Down here the buggers are big burly blokes, and I certainly don't want to pay them those kind of taxes!

Some years ago i was wondering if ordering tobacco from abroad was legal or not. Being honest prevents from being guilty i thought and so i drove down to harbor to our local customs office. Saw some custom officer and asked if is it legal or not. The man looked strangely at me and said that he had never heard anyone ordering tobacco from abroad so probably it must be strictly verboten. Then he took some book, checked some directives and found out that i can legally order 250g of any tobacco products and pay huge taxes. How lovely i thought, 250 g is 5 tins. Damn.
As i was already walking back to my car the officer came after me. This time with another book of mysteries.
Now he found out that i can order as much tobacco from EU as i want (within reasonable amounts i think, not truckloads). The customs wont open or check my parcels (unless there's a reason to believe that it contains something illegal). The shipment will come straight to my home. But after i've received the packet, i should go down to customs office to pay the excise taxes. I would have to take with me either all the documents or tins and they would then calculate how much i would have to pay.
This was strange. I asked the officer if he really believed that i would voluntarily betray myself and tell the customs about tobacco shipment that i already have received at home. The officer thought for a second and then he said he didn't believe i would do so. At least he wouldn't. Then we started to laugh. Ever since i've ordered much tobaccos from EU and always paid zero taxes to our customs, legal or not.
When the shipment comes from outside EU then it's all different. The customs check every packet and also put heavy taxes whenever they can.
However whenever any tobacco brand is available locally, i rather buy it here to support local tobacco shops. The difference in prices is only about 1-2 € / tin. There's still many brands that you can't buy here so the to get them you have to order them from Germany or UK.
