Sure, I do it all the time. But unlike cigarettes, the only real way to put a pipe out is to simply sit it down and stop puffing on it. If you do this with a cigarette of course it will continue to burn but not so with a pipe, if not puffed, it will go out. Then when you have some more time simply relight the pipe. There's the school that says tap out the ashes before relighting and the other that just sets fire to it and calls it good. Either way I've never seen much of a difference.

Putting the pipe down works, but if you need to fire out in a hurry you can seal your palm over the bowl then draw very hard to create a vacuum for about 10 seconds. Pipe should be completely extinguished. Of course your will need a smooth top pipe so you can create a seal.

Pipes pretty much taste the same on relights. Some tobaccos (mostly non-aromatics) really shine from a rest after a short smoke.

Regrettably it is time to say goodbye to a few old friends. Smoking a couple of times a month does not warrant owning dozens of pipes and I seem to keep buying more. So, today it is a farewell smoke of Frog Morton in a fun little L Antra.

to me that is one of the best things about smoking a pipe,vs cigarettes. i am working on getting off the coffin nails and am getting there, i find myself wanting to fire up the pipe more just sometimes all i have time fore is a cigarette. but i like the fact that i can just quit puffing on it, put the wind cap in it and stuff it in my pocket and come back to it later
