Oh and in keeping with the title of the thread; I just started smoking a pipe this week. Mine is not the best there is, being my first and all, but here it is!

    I enjoy it.
The stem doesn't go with the bowl; if you look close you can see that the bowl once had a different stem on it. But it's a nice mix 'n' match in my opinion and I love the "lizard skin" look of the bowl. It's not the dragon claw meerschaum I had my eyes on but I like it.

Now that you say that,it looks as if it was a straight stem at one time converted to a bent.

    Hi Mick,

I've no idea about your custom politics but ever thought about ordering some from England? Tobacco is still about moderately priced there. Hey man, you're the Commonwealth.
Not to speak about ordering from EU, where prices are still cheap in some countries (tax policy is not about EU thing; it's about national business).

In Finland the taxes are still moderate while in Germany they are even more moderate. Not to talk about eastern Europe (Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia) or Poland where the prices are cheap and the selection is great. Or not to talk about Spain where the prices were low. A tin of Capstan for 6€ away from the tourist areas.

Cheapest (and in some levels also best) was in Tunis or Tschad. I've no idea about the name. In the local tobacco store i just asked 'English blends' and that is what i got. Some local bulk, maybe.
Some years ago a friend from a local pub brought some pipe tobacco from Turkey. The name was Türk pipo tütünü or something. Can't say even today if it was good or bad. Smelled like machorca.

I could order from other countries. I've ordered from the US before, because they are cheaper than here, even after you add in postage costs. However, I try to keep it to a minimum so that I stay under customs radar. Do it too often or get caught up in a random check and you have all our excise added on top of what you've already payed. It could turn a $10 tin of tobacco into a $50-60 tin in an instant. We currently pay around $40 here, depending on the tobacco. I like to order in the odd tin because we just don't get any of the decent tobacco here. It's all what is known in the US as, 'drug store blends'. Thanks for giving me the idea to look at other countries besides the US though Tomi. I'm going to go on the hunt for other brands after Christmas now .

Sorry that I haven't had much to offer in the past... Amount of time...

Dealing with work issues and family medical issues...
Hopefully after Tuesday, I will have something to offer as far as "eye candy"...
