You'd about have to live in a tobacco-producing state to know that the jig is up. A short answer is not easy but I try:
Over 50 years NC went from poverty to wealth on the strength of controlled tobacco prices and artifically limited tobacco acres.
Wealth (for certain tobacco growers) followed when a system of tobacco acreage quotas and price supports were enacted.
If you had quota assigned (in acres) you could grow only that much tobacco and it WOULD be bought.
If you didn't use your quota to produce you could rent it (and do nothing except collect a check) or sell it.*
10 years ago price controls were phased out along with the associated auction system.
The quota system was eliminated so, now, whoever wants to grow tobacco can.
Without the auction system you cannot necessarily sell your crop or sell it at a profit.
Growers generally now contract directly with processors.
To transition from known sale of a crop (or income from quota rental, etc.) NC "bought out" quota from farmers over 10 years.
Farmers with quota have been getting money for the past decade whether they produce a bale, a leaf or nothing at all.
Smart guys are trying out new crops (like spuds for booze) but nothing much except dope gives a return per acre like tobacco did.
NC now has a burgeoning organic farming community, vineyards, specialty crops, etc. to try to replace tobacco.
I think big farmers will come out OK and small farmers are screwed if they're not lucky, efficient, hard-working and creative.
I hope I explained this correctly, in brief. Any growers out there who know better, please criticize my summary without reservations.
*It has been said a Carolina tobacco growers most profitable piece of farm equipment was his mailbox. A tobacco season was usually profitable, very hard work and short. Farmers used to work their butts off, sell their crop, make a bundle and go on welfare until the next spring. The only thing farmers have for sure now is working their butts off."We'll talk, if you like. I'll tell you right out, I am a man who likes talking to a man who likes to talk."

Thanked: 983Sorry for the late reply. I've been out of the loop for a bit. Playing catch up now. I was the same as you Tomi, but strangely enough, I found myself liking New York in my visit to the US and many of it's states and NP's including Yellowstone etc.
I should try and take some photo's of the display at my local RSL (Returned Services League). We have a few military items of interest in the cabinets there, including a couple of razors. . No pipes that I know of, but if I have abetter look, I might find one or two. We're still in the middle of refurbing.
I don't own a meer, but I'll break out a clay later on in the month p'rap's.
