I had said I would post my first pipe smoking experience here; however, that may not happen, as I will be smoking my first pipe while fishing the South Fork of the Yuba River up in the Tahoe Nat'l Forest. That, at least, is my plan, and I hope to head up there this weekend. I will let you all know how it goes. I have a Peterson billiard pipe, and it's light enough that I should be able to keep it in my mouth while hiking and rock hopping along the river, and casting and, hopefully, landing some trout. Anyhow, I learned quite a bit about pipes and pipe tobacco from this thread, so thanks to you all!

I have Cobs and Briar.....tough call on which I like better, depends on the mood. I have two Petey's systems and three Vikings, one Butz Choquin, one Jirsa and three Cobs. My current favorites are my two almost identical Vikings with Nickle Ferrules. They are the most comfy when I'm clenching, very dependable, always an even smoke. Probably would be the two pipes I would take with me to the afterlife if it were possible.

Went fishing this morning for a couple hours and smoked my first pipe, a Peterson Shannon with some Peterson Irish Whiskey tobacco. The smoke was totally enjoyable, and made the hiking, rock hopping, and fishing all the more enjoyable. At times I thought I would have to relight after spending quite a bit of time casting and retrieving or looking for new pools to fish and not puffing, but nope, it remained lit after the second lighting. The Iris Whiskey is good, although I have nothing to compare it to, but I liked it. Like I said yesterday, I learned a lot from this thread, and I look forward to my next smoke while out and about in the forest.

BTW, landed one nice trout, lost another just as I was about to reach for it. I decided to reposition the pipe in my mouth and the trout got away. Oh well, I was going to release it anyway, but it's always nice to land them.

I don't expect to be too picky about tobacco as I have a long history with tobocco use, starting in Jr. high school with chewing Beechnut and Redman, (I quit at 24 when I met my wife. Kissing her is better than chew), I smoked cigarettes ocassionally during my twenties, and I smoke cigars on special ocassions, like at our annual Christmas party, and I enjoy them all. In fact, I still get an appetite for chewing tobacco from time to time.

Anyhow, does the particular tobacco for break in matter that much? The pipe is a Peterson Billiard, and the Irish Whiskey was a freebie with the pipe. Thanks!
Wow. Your situation sounds almost identical to mine except for the fact I quit chewing about 2 yrs ago. I've always loved the smell of pipe tobacco and have had a pouch in the corner of my shave den for the last 1 1/2 years. Well, I finally broke down and bought a couple of $40 pipes and have been breaking them in. I'm a little concerned about getting hooked back on tobacco, though.

They even have the star and cross on the blade. The chap said they were new old stock he had picked up. £12.00. If anyone is interested i can post a picture and next time pick a few up. They had about ten on the display card. I am not sure if these are fairly common or a top find.
I have on and they work great I just wanted to know how old thy were I was told to put I up and save it and get another to use???

Tonight's smoke was "Shortcut to Mushrooms" in a smallish briar from the local shop. I ordered the STM from Just for Him along with a mini churchwarden from pipes and cigars.com. Well the churchwarden is sold out and won't be re-supplied. Bummer. So I have been devouring the STM in the mini briar. It is the only blend I have smoked in it and it will stay that way. OTOH I had 2 parcels arrive today. I got 7oz. of "Father Orin" from 4Noggins and 7oz. 1776 "Old Dominion" from Sterling Tobacco. Both smell amazing, the Father Orin smells like Juicy Fruit chewing gum. The "Old Dominion" just smells good in its own way. Ordered a couple Capris from pipes and cigars.com. They were "inexpensive" and that's what drew me in. They looked smart too. I also have 7 more oz. of STM on its way.......What have I gotten into?!?!? The Capris will be for the Father Orin and the Old Dominion. I can't wait for the arrival of all the new goodies. As a side note; the STM is some good tobacco. I am glad I heard about it here and gave it a try. It is definitely an earthy type smell and smoke. It smokes dry and cool. If you honk on it too hard it may tingle a bit, but no real bite. I have heard it called an "aromatic English", maybe I don't know. The flavor is woodsy, pine-ish. It also has spicy citrus in it as well. I explained it to my wife that it tastes like smoky Skittles. Kind of a burning tart sour black cherry flavor. Hard to describe. Good stuff all the same!...Evan

Great looking pipe. It suits you well and definitely suits the surroundings. I hope it brings you as much relaxation as my pipes have given me (and I hope your wife is as supportive of your pipe hobby as mine is ).

Hearing your story made me wish I was back in Pennsylvania, walking the creeks with my ultra-light rod trying to sneak up on trout in the streams.
