I find beyond 4 gives my a bit of a sore throat but 4 is fine... I guess it's my magic number for now
During the week I tend to stay in the 1-2 range, but during the weekend that can go as high as 5-6 depending on the blend and what I'm doing. I tend to tinker in my shop on the weekends or just potter around with the dogs so its easy to smoke then. Though I'm sure it doesnt hurt that I keep a couple jars in the shop.

Y'know ,sometimes I just don't want to have to repack a new bowl and get the tobacco dried out just right so it lights right and all that dribble. So I break out the big bowl, pack it once, and it becomes a part of me till it runs it's course. Clamp it,hang it,point with it all that good stuff. I do like my small bowls for work sometimes but maybe the big bowl thing is just me getting older and lazier too ha ha I dunno ?

Back to Ecormier's thing about the throat though. I do on rare occasion get the throaty thing. It certainly is possible to over smoke yourself. It's not like the human body was made for smoking after all heh. And there are times when I have half bowls laying around too. Smoking a pipe is a very personal thing and really no one should look down their nose at the person next to'em for how they smoke......unless they're doing something so train wreck weird that you just can't help but stare. That is the wonderful imperfection of life that we must learn to accept. so light up and here's to non homogenized living Woot !!

I have half bowls laying around too, but then I finish them.

just looked at the ashtray next to my chair. Three pipes with partial bowls to finish.

Wouldn't be surprised mate. But then I live in the country that taxes the hell out of tobacco and alcohol...All in the name of good health of course. They justify themselves for the excessive pocket lining.

I recently got an order with two tobaccos, one arrived moist like usual while the other was bone dry like crispy autumn leaves. Some amount of each by weight. Once I'd hydrated the dry one there was twice as much of it as the other in terms of volume. I didn't think to weigh it, that would have been pretty interesting.

So I have been thinking. At what point or about how many bowls do most of you guys give your pipes a thorough cleaning? I use pipe cleaners after every smoke but I'm curious more about alcohol and or salt treatments and cleaning. What indicates when this is necessary? Also am wondering about the carbon build up in the bowl is this burnt tobacco or burnt wood? I usually twist a paper towel in there after smoking to get some of the tobacco and carbon debris out, is this bad? Lol Sorry for the broad spectrum question.
