Many outfits make great tool watches for far less money. Sinn is one of them and their technology is way better than Rolex. Rolex is the 900 lb gorilla in the Swiss watch Industry so they can throw their weight around. I always felt they were way too expensive for what you get.

Their waterproof tech was essentially stolen from a watch outfit from the 1920s long out of business with no one to protect their patents.

Several years ago one of the founders at Timezone did a breakdown of the Rolex Explorer and it revealed shoddy finishing internally with attention to detail only where it was needed. The Rolex fanboys hounded the guy for years driving him off the site.

Nothing wrong with Rolex-just another quality watch and great advertising and hype.

LOL - fair enough, but the other 900 lb gorilla in the room is anytime Rolex is mentioned, people lose their shite.....

I like watches that make me feel like Bond. Perhaps this is basic and typical, meh, I'll even admit it was that scene in that James Bond movie that got me into straight razor shaving.

Here's a watch that I would love to have but it of my price-range. Made by Urwerk.
EDIT: As far as Rolex goes, I know them by the impressions I've got from years of movies and such, I can't help but wonder "every time" I see one.. Is that a cheap fake??? Was this watch lining the inside of a long coat at one point? Do they have it in Not Gold? I know nothing John Snow.

In the end, there are plenty of watches out there in that are in the one to two grand range that are high quality and will last you the rest of your life even if you be a young whippersnapper. Many can be had grey market for a few hundred bucks

Folks buy mega thousand dollar watches because of the name on the dial and the advertising or public perception of that watch. No different than with any luxury item really. At least with the Unwerk (if you can afford it) it is truly a unique item almost custom made (not really) but so limited in production like similar items you are in a club of sorts.

The problem is when you see watches costing mega thousands and 5 figures in the end the technology is all the same and the mvmts are all made in a production line and when it comes time to service them the cost will take your breath away.

I currently own and have owned multiple mechanical watches at all price points including 5 figure prices during the past 45 years. Over that time I've learned 4 things:

1.) Almost all modern mechanical movements/watches are mass produced in an assembly line environment. Some make their own movements some use purchased movements.

2.) You can find wonderful watches at all price levels.

3.) Servicing a mechanical movement is expensive regardless of the cost of the watch. You could be faced with paying more for the servicing than you paid for the original watch so you may end up choosing to throw it out and buy a new one rather than service it. Somehow this has always bothered me.

4.) Regardless of how you feel about luxury brand watches including "the 900 lb gorilla" mentioned earlier they and Rolex in particular (including Tudor their sister company) on average hold or increase their value year after year. You can consider this fact unintelligible, meritless, foolhardy even stupid but when I buy one, wear it for 5 years and sell it for 10% or 20% more than I paid, the money in my bank account is real. That tells me all I need to know.

So funny. If I had a Patek in white gold on my arm nobody would react.

If you had an Aquanaut on your wrist, you'd be called a, "fanboy" and told that it's a mass produced, overpriced watch while many superior watches could be had for half the price....maybe a Glashutte Original might be acceptable (love the Go's)......

They certainly do make some crazy large watches with some busy design features. You might get noticed from space Not my taste but as they say different strokes.

I've recently been on Atlantic kick and acquired a few vintage Worldmaster models. I have a fond memory of my G'pa wearing two of them, black and white dials. Always liked the look and reliability of this Swiss manufacturer.
    Cheers.
