I will probably have this watch forever..
My daily driver however needed an upgrade. Thanks to some tips from you gents I went to a few sites and did some research on various new and older mechanical and automatic watches.
Some very strong tool watches being made in Germany right now, and I almost pulled the trigger on one before seeing the below watch from Seiko.

    <pic snip>

A no longer in production automatic with a 50+ year production run called the Alpinist. Seiko is a name that, to me, just slips under the radar, but they really have made some amazing timepieces..
Only produced for the Japanese domestic market, with all the features I would ever need in a watch, plus an absolutely beautiful dial face that ultimately was the reason I bought it.
A mid tier performer with a touch of refinement that will work in the office, boardroom, or back roads.
Got mine as an open box return at an acceptable price. But still the most expensive watch I have ever bought myself.
A personal indulgence that shouldn’t scream indulgence with a name like Seiko.
    Happy father day men.
Screw down crown, great WR, stunning dial, read a lot about this watch on a couple of other forums I belong to - superb choice, and a great reference. Seiko is a great brand, I still have the one my girlfriend ( now wife) bought me in 1991, still works perfectly, and it's a Seiko.

Congrats Mike, now you have to post a nice wrist shot....

I used to have that watch in the same color but with a green leather strap. A very nice watch for a very reasonable price.

My brother has one and he loves it.

Despite the abuse, still keeps perfect time. May actually look into a new strap, and maybe a crystal.
And the new Alpinist, on the received strap.

Really enjoy the new watch, as well as the daily work horses I have rekindled.
This new one, to me, matches my MG and looks good at the end of the sleeve.
All I need,, for now.. but there will be more..
someone’s tag line on one of the watch forums read something like
“Time is too precious to keep on a crappy time piece” or something to that affect.

LOL - absolutely, I believe it was SRP member "Donut", who posted some beautiful "high" horology watches earlier in the thread, Lange, Patek, AP, and others, and who grinned and said something along the lines of, "RAD is the "gateway" drug compared to watches", or something along that line.

Great save on the Seiko Chrono, still have a version of that one my gf (now wife) bought me around 1991....and yes, the green dials are usually quite beautiful, heard them referred to as, "Wimbledon Green: IIRC.

Bummed about missing the meet in July....sigh!

I have the middle watch pictured I believe. Can’t make out the words, it’s my daily driver has been all these years on a drilling rig, it’s tough just replace the crystal once in a while and the band, but perfect time, as for really high end watches I never had the inclination like my dad did. I have a really nice Tag my wife got me, a Longines my dad gave me, and used to have a Rolex, can’t remember which. I bought in while in Southeast Asia, and sold it a couple of years later. Only wish I had kept seeing as how we bought them dirt cheap there and it would sell for a lot more today.

I should be a little embarrassed, but up until I got the Seiko, I wore the old Timex plain face

I dont have anything cool, but I have a super soft spot for 1920's to 1930's Hamilton watches. One day, when my daughter is out of college, maybe I can buy myself one.

Ohhh man....lord knows what a fortune you might have been sitting on....this video is from 2016, probably add another $20K, maybe more nowadays to what this great guy would have got for his Rolex when he also bought overseas at the military PX.

My memory isn’t that good. But it was less than 200$. Maybe Spendur remembers better. But I did sell it sfter 5 years for 850$ which was still cheap I found out. But if I had kept it I’m not so sure I’d like it that much. This Seiko is mighty fine. I posted a picture way back in this thread. If it wasn’t hanging on my medicine cabinet at my Rv at work I’d post another

My brother bought a Rolex, the non date basic diver (Submariner) around 1968 when he was in the seabees stationed in Nam. It was around $200 and of course now they sell new for over 7 grand. He was recently offered around $3500 for it. It still runs great.

Of course if you had one of the first edition of limited edition models from that era you'd be sitting on a goldmine.

Rolex doesn't do any LE type watches. Your brothers would be a 4 digit Submariner, tweaks and improvements made along the way until the 5 digit Subs, then the new 6 digit ceramic maxi-case Subs(which I don't prefer)

And you meant $35,000 correct? And if he has the provenance that it really was a military watch, has photos of him wearing the watch, only owner, watch would probably be worth $135,000....vintage military Subs, with provenance, whole different ball game.

The COMEX branded Subs, sell one, buy a house basically.....
