There must be a lot of money in making watches. I guess if you can do a blueprint you can have some chinese outfit make it up for you and then you throw a mvmt in. The problem is so many folks are doing it they have to distinguish themselves from all the others so it's either copy some well known brand or go off on the deep end.

Some interesting stuff just not my cup of tea.

Not necessarily no, but I'd challenge anyone to find a watch with the finishing of a Grand Seiko Quartz at below their price point. I find those to have an amazing value for money (I don't mind quartz watches, as long as they're highly accurate).

After that, the question of course is whether you want that level of finishing, and whether you like the esthetics.

A personal favourite of mine is the Laurent Ferrier Galet Square. For me watches don't get more beautiful than those. But ... it is beyond what I'll ever be able to afford.
I haven't seen anything affordable in that cushion case style come near.

Yep, it makes me not want to wear a Rolex.
I once borrowed a simple one from a friend, my daughter saw it and went "OOOOOOOOOOOOH WOOOOOOOW A ROOOOOLEX !!!!!".
I kinda ruined the brand for me as I really don't want that kind of visibility/attention.
I like some luxuries from time to time but they need to be discreet.

That is interesting. I bought my Rolex SeaDweller in 1999 and use it every day.
The only people that have ever noticed it are my dive crew, when I wear it on my dive suit.

Quite a few rungs down on the ladder from the SeaDweller is my vintage 1960s Omega Seamaster DeVille, which is my everyday watch. Goes with a suit or a polo and jeans. Straight out of Mad Men...

Have you seen the prices on new DeVilles lately?

Your watch is one that has stood the test of time right up there with any Rolex.

I would be lucky if a leather strap would last me 2 months.

Agreed, seldom, if ever, anyone notices my watches, and if someone notices, they're are fellow WIS, and it's always good to talk watches.

The SD, the original one, is a superb watch, one of my favourites, and I love the fact that they are ALL built like tanks.

Last year in Aruba, swimming in the Ocean and pools, snorkelling on the reefs, jet skiing, ATV'ing across the dessert, wore my Day-Date, and never had a worry about it, and never got a single glance or question about it.

And, I survived being chased and hunted by a pack of angry Flamingo's......

I have not looked at prices for a new Omega. Probably couldn't afford one. I am lucky enough to also have my grandfather's gold Omega which was a retirement gift to him from his employees. I enjoy wearing that one on special occasions.

Not sure what you do with a leather band watch to ruin it that quickly? I wouldn't go diving with a leather band. I have two old Seiko dive watches for that. Inexpensive but practical beaters.
