S&W 4506 .45 ACP. It and the .40 S&W are the only two handgun rounds I consider sufficient to stop an attacker.

    Default cz 550 fs 9.3 X 62 Mauser

Any of you Gentlemen hunt things with big horns, teeth and claws? I have been looking at the CZ Model 550, full stock version in cal. 9.3 X 62 Mauser. I have very little big game expierence and have never had a rifle larger than the old 06 but after looking at this CZ I think it would be ideal for elk, moose, big deer, bears, russian wild boar in thick timber. It's standard load is a .366 cal., weighing 286 grains at 2360 fps. Any opinions?

My mother in law. But it is more of a defensive thing rather than a hunt. ;P

I dunno, plenty of moose, deer and black bear get done in with a 30-06 not to mention a 30-30 around here. I think that caliber was originally brought out for the African trade so you got plenty of jam there. The draw back is that you won't find ammo at the corner store for that baby if you get in a jam for ammo. If you want more snot than a 30-06 has got the 338 Win Mag is probably more commonly available in North America.

I went to Wikipedia and people seem quite fond of that round. They refer to it as a good "all around gun". Looks like plenty to let the air out of most anything you're going to go after.

    d. m. ellington: What are you going to hunt and where? If you are going for elephants in Africa the choice would be different than e.g. grizzly in Alaska.

I have always had a fascination for .35 cal. rifles. Many who want more than the 06 usually opt for a 300 magnum. It fires the same bullets as the 06 just faster. High velocity acts as a flatner for trajectory. How flat do you need to shoot when most game is killed at a lot less than 200 yards. The .35 cal. family, 35 Whelen, 358 Winchester and the 350 Remington Magnum would seem to be a better answer to me. These cartridges have been labeled as mice to moose and rats to rhinos medicine. True you can get a .338 but I feel the 35s with a havier bullet would be a better stopper at short range. When you take the 9.3 Mauser you get a cartridge that will handle almost anything with mild recoil. Package it in the CZ 550 FS and you get a compact rifle, Mauser action, about 7 lbs, 41 inches long, five round mag capacity, a wonderful set trigger, fast acqluision sights and a stock that fits almost everyone. Ammo availability is a slight drawback but this is not as much of a problem. You just set up for reloading and go. This set up fills the gap between the 06 and the 375 H & H and is within reach of most folks dollar wise. If I were a PH in Africa this would be my standby for all but the most dangerous game and if I were an Alaskan Guide in big bear country it would never be far from my reach. In my situation it is something for an old man to play with.

PS Just found out Ruger is chambering one of its rifles for this cartridge.

I'm not a hunter but speaking of heavy bullets and short range brush rifles, a Marlin 45-70 lever action has been calling my name since the first time I read about it and saw one.

Yeah, I've had a Ruger #1 in 45-70 calling for me for years. But the doctors told me to try to ignore the voices! But really, much love for the 45-70! A couple guys used to use them on bear. Bears are tough, but that round hits them like a train, they go down quick. Besides, it's just a pretty round!! This is my 45-70 pipe tamper with 500 grn soft point.

Looks like you have it all sorted as far as your needs go. A mannlicher stocked rifle is a joy to carry in the bush and will point better than a plain short barreled half stock rifle. I have had a few of these mannlicher stocked rifles including one in 8x57 in a Brno small ring Mauser action which is 1/2 lb lighter than the current Brnos. The recoil was getting to be on the stiff side loaded with a heavy bullet and a good charge behind it. I imagine a 9.3X62 is more of the same. I am not adverse to recoil as one of my favourite rifles to shoot was a Brno ZKK 602 in 375 H&H. Just saying that might be a pint sized firecracker. Have you been able to try shooting the rifle to see if it is comfortable? Anyway it looks like it will fill your requirements nicely.
