Monday morning. Projected to be a nice Spring day, I hope. But did have a very nice shave. Brought out a soap that I han't used in awhile. The Italian Omega soft soap. Surprised that more isn't said about it . Very nice menthol soap feeling. Good lather, good slide . Should be a good Summer soap.
Razor: the Larkin again. Worked very well today. Hope it was my technique and not just that it was sharper!(:-). Hone: Crown, brush: Grosvenor Bristle & Badger, nice brush English made. Alum, Clubman Bay Rum. Can't seem to move off the BR. Balm Nivea Replenishing. Nice start to the day.Last edited by Johnus; 04-16-2012 at 01:55 PM.

Thanked: 114I gave up on the Henry Sears yesterday. I’ve tried honing this particular razor in the past with marginal success. In my opinion the steel is very soft and it’s challenging to produce a clean and durable edge. (Free PIF to anyone wanting to give it a go.)
I focused on the Genco instead. I used a DMT 325 to get past some pitting and I set the bevel with my Norton 1K. Then to my Swaty followed by webbing and unpasted leather. I didn’t count laps or anything, but I did spend more time on the Swaty than I expected I would need to before the blade was dialed in.
The shave was OK this morning, better than I expected but not as nice as I’m able to achieve with my other hones. I give the razor a B/B- in the shave department. I will probably touch the blade up again before tomorrow’s shave.
One thing I will try too is to relap my Swaty to achieve a smoother finish. This particular BH was recently lapped with a DMT 325, but I think I want to relap it with a progression of fine sandpapers and then buff it smooth. We’ll see if this helps the shave.

Well, I bevel 'refreshed', and honed my red Imp for my shave today on a pike stone. It's all I have. It has two different grits since I used the small broken piece to try and make a slurry( my pike is broken in half 70/30)

I'm having issues with my joseph Allen I think it's warped, and I keep folding the edge up. Does anyone have any opinions on doubling up the tape on the spine?

Thanked: 114I used a Joseph Allen for the JaNorton test and it too was a challenge to hone. I got it to shave perfectly, eventually, but it did take a number of tries. I'm not sure what to say about your situation other than don't get discouraged. I'll let others address the specific taping question.
This morning I did 10 laps on the dry Swaty and my Genco shaved much better than yesterday. I upgrade the shave to B+. I will keep tinkering.

Hi Nuntits, I usually double tape all my older razors with electrical tape. Seems to work well for my style. Did you see if your hone is flat? I usually do the pencil marking and lapping every 4-5 months.
You might want to try Magic Marker on the razors edge to see if there's a problem. It may be bent. Good luck.Last edited by Johnus; 04-17-2012 at 02:45 PM.

Sunday i used the Eyre that is a nice piece of Sheffield. on Monday i switched back to the Stehlo and that was also a nice shave.
Monday night i spent some time honing the w greaves&sons probably gave it another 600 laps on the krystolo with water and finally it was mowing arm hair above the skin. there is some uneven spine wear especially at the toe but it is finally sharp.
did 3 passes with it this morning with only a little tugging on the neck during the ATG it will get a little more loving before tomorrow. not sure if i like how thin the tang is with the upper and lower thumb-notches. just a little hard for my hands to fully control mainly at the toe, the cutting edge is about 3.25"
