No, I don't think that was it.
I believe he tried the method shown on a number of razors himself, and was unable to find a good shave from that.
Correct me if I'm wrong here Lynn

I'm starting to wonder why you're a member here if you think the Forums are so bad and close-minded?

We said that the shaves are probably not comfortable at all. I can shave with a tuna can lid if I wanted to smooth the edges out a bit, or a knife, or an ax, etc. That doesn't mean we would be shaving the in a way we all were interested in in the first place, in a luxurious way like the old barber's did it.

And I'm sorry but if you're bleeding during a shave and using a high angle, something isn't right, right?

This is also what various shaving shops advise. It is also how it is explained in the 2 Dutch (modern) books on straight razor shaving I read.

The only Benelux people whom I know do things like we do are in fact members here.

I saw something like this too. Supposedly in A lot of places in Europe they would set a bevel on a coticule and slurry then move right to pastes of different grit ratings....

Interesting. I'm a long time part of the German razor community and indeed it is believed that the actual shavereadyness comes from the pasted strop.
But until the coming of diamond pastes in differen grits I have not seen anything else as a strop pasting material than chromium oxide.
Lukas acrylic paint with chromiumoxide has been the preferred method back then.
The general idea was a setup of stones up to 8.000 (or a coticule) and then finishing on the Cr2O3. High grit stones have not been that common until a couple of years ago.
But I never heard of different grit stropping

    @Birnando:
Ah, that makes sense. But that is not quite the same, I think. I really would like to have someone shave with one of his razors. I wonder if these would at least shave OKish

So amazingly enough, after 185 posts here, a video challenge to visit, and some rather vocal ex-members trying this on another forum, and more than a few guys here trying this, even though they knew what would happen...

The outcome is exactly what every single person said it was going to be "A Rough Shave" this isn't exactly an epiphany of honing knowledge considering many of the Hone Guys here on SRP have tested edges all the way down to the 1k level to prove that an edge gets shaving sharp at a pretty low level...

Not one person ever said it would not cut hair, not one person said it wouldn't get an edge sharp, but consider that every single person that tried this was a fairly experienced Straight Razor shaver/honer and some were very experienced, and they got a rough shave, then think about all the struggles that a Newb experiences with a true shave ready edge. Then maybe you will see why myself and many others said "Ummmm this isn't such a good Straight Razor honing vid"
Personally I have no desire to treat my face to that kind shaving irritation if I did, then I could do it much much easier, much faster and much cheaper..

Honing my razors has always been a lot less trouble than having several girlfriends!

After following this thread and viewing the razor sharpening video and finding it highly suspect as to results. After knowing Lynn has tried to duplicate the technique and finds it lacking. And knowing the honing techniques suggested and taught on this forum work! I would suggest this quote attributed to Mark Twain to Mr. Carter:

"What gets us into trouble is not what we don't know. It's what we know for sure that just ain't so."

    Regards, Howard

Long time lurker, just wanted to give some background info about Carter

    1. He's well-respected in the knife making community, if you go to Knifeforums.com > In the Kitchen or http://www.kitchenknifeforums.com most people there agree that his knives are fantastic and that they come "scary sharp" out of the box

    2. His personality and marketing style rub some people the wrong way

    3. He claims that tools are around 10% of the equation being skill the other 90%, so in order to get your knives sharp, focus more in improving your skill and less in the next best magic hone, compound, etc.

    3. He is not afraid to put his money where his mouth is and won the Sharpening Olympics @ The Knife Forums using the King 1k/6K combo, the runner up used hundreds of dollars worth of hones.

There is very little doubt he is a master at forging and sharpening steel (he's also an ABS Mastersmith). What remains to be seen is if the same methods that worked so well with knives work with razors, so I would love that Gssixgun takes him up on his offer.

ps: I'm not affiliated with Carter in any way, shape or form, but I do own a couple of his knives and enjoy them immensely
