You need trees to split wood. Besides coal is abundant in my area and gives better heat than wood.

I was looking around for a cast iron Dutch Oven for my son's upcoming 25th Birthday and stumbled upon this piece of cast iron.

It must have been cast from Iron from Krypton as for something that's only 3" across that's pretty pricey!! YES--you only get ONE!!

I ended up picking up a vintage Lodge up at FleaBay.

My son was raised with me using cast iron and not non stick cookware (his mother liked the non stick) anyway now that he's been out on his own for a few years he's come to appreciate the value of using cast iron.

I've given him a 8" Lodge pan that I had from my camping kit (I also gave his sister one from the same kit) but on occasion he's come over to borrow my stove top Dutch Oven which he did almost two weeks ago.

Well that Dutch still hasn't made it home. However since his 25th birthday will be in April I went looking for a used Dutch for his present. I found what was being sold as a 'Vintage' Lodge Dutch and while I could have purchased a brand new for much less I bought it.

It arrived today and it looked much better than the pictures, but it was quite apparent that it had never seen use. What I 'Think' I have is one of the last of the 'Non Pre- Seasoned' cast iron pieces that's NOS.

What looked like rust washed off with water and a 000 synthetic steel wool pad. There was no real rust to be found.

    Here's a seller's pic.

To call it 'Vintage' is a bit of a stretch------I figured it was only about 10-15 years old and I went looking and it confirmed my suspicions.

Anyway it's in the oven for the first round of Real Seasoning.

Roy--If you ever find a Wagner Dutch oven with out the lid, a Lodge lid will fit it perfectly. That's what I use on my Wagner.

I take it that you are talking about a 10" dutch?

Yep, my Wagner is a 10" and I use the same shaped Lodge lid as in your picture. The Lodge lid is a perfect seal and fit.

I heated up one of the #6 Wagners and the big #10 Wagner today. The menu?........Chicken fried steak in the #6 and extra crispy hash browns in the #10. The chicken fried steak was double baptized in batter. When it was done I made white gravy with the left over drippings. There ya go Roy and Glenn.....a menu suggestion for tonight. You may drool now.
