Well well...it's that time of the month!
This is the latest order from Yuuki-Cha, which arrived today:
From left to right we have the 'traditional' Sayamamidori asamushi sencha from Kagoshima Prefecture—I'm looking forward to trying this but I still have the end of my last packet of sencha to finish first; next is the Houjicha, again from Kagoshima—this I was going to take to work, so I opened it to see what it was like...it will actually be staying at home, now, as you need more leaf than I expected (about 6g for a 6oz cup is recommended) and my infuser is going to be too small and badly shaped! Pics of this are below.
Carrying on...we have a packet of regular genmaicha made with sencha from Kyoto (also recommended to make with 10g of leaf, so this will also be staying at home!); finally we have the 'Kushime' fukamushi Tokoname kyusu, also shown below:
Now, while a fukamushi kyusu is designed specifically for brewing deep-steamed sencha, I actually bought it for my roasted teas (or at least teas with a more 'roasted' flavour. I'm really pleased with it and the size (about 280ml—enough for a couple of cups) is perfect.
So I figured I'd give it a test run and I opened the houjicha because, until I realised it wasn't really suitable for brewing without a teapot, I was going to take it to work tomorrow. Here are the photos:
I'm very pleased with this tea! It has a wonderful, deep, toasty flavour but it's not overpowering or smoky like a Chinese souchong. It also looks great in the pot!
I think it's going to totally change the way I drink Japanese tea. Up until now I've spent a fair amount on sencha, which I've drunk on a fairly regular basis—the packet above was about $15 but usually, take the Magokoro sencha that I bought last time, for example, I pay about $20 for 100g.
The houjicha, however, was $10 and is very very nice in its own right. Similarly, the genmaicha is $12 for 200g. I think from now on, I'll be buying more houji/genmai cha and drinking them more on a daily basis, while buying good quality sencha but keeping it as a nicer tea. I'm definitly looking forward to this year's shincha season, now, and I'm hoping to pick up a few packs of something really nice, and also, once I buy myself a shiboridashi, I'm very tempted to try a packet of gyokuro, as well.
Anyway, that's me for the night!
Enjoy!

"she drank a pitcher of tea made from at least 100 tea bags daily". Yeah, well then. I think this is more of a rarity than the norm. I mean, I like my tea strong, but 100 bags per pitcher seems like a bit too much. I think this boils down to moderation. Can one infuse that much tea into one pitcher of water? I mean, how would one do that? Ten bags at a time? Then add water to replace what was soaked up and repeat, like, nine more times??
Personally, I think they oughta check what's between this gal's ears as opposed to how thick her other bones are.Silence is Golden, but duct tape is Silver.

Thanked: 1160Havin some of the Alokozay black tea that Phil sent. Pretty good tea. I would make it comparable to the British tea I drink normally. Good stuff. Thank you Phil and Chad also for bringin it to my attention. Hope I don't get flouridis or whatever that stuff is called ha ha. Hey...least I know my teef won't fall out readily ! And I really do enjoy my tea in glass.I like to look at the color which adds to the experience. I do feel it somehow tastes better also but that I'm sure is just psychological.
