I had a similar experience. I usually use raw, washed sugar; ran out so I used some maple syrup. With a heartier tea, it's pretty good!

2255 on a Saturday night. Years ago, I'd be in a bar, sipping Crown Royal watching "festivities". Now, I'm at home, sipping tea, watching Anthony Bourdain. Things have changed, and I think for the better. The tea tonight is some apple flavoured black with a bit of raw sugar and a touch of cinnamon. I'm almost out of the apple tea, and although I was convinced it wasn't going to be reordered, I'm really liking my modification I've done to it. I guess it will go on the next order list. I hope everyone's having a good weekend!!

Any time I add sweetener to my tea, it's always maple syrup. I love the flavor it adds, as well as the additional antioxidants you get with maple syrup.
