My family were/are horrible cooks. I learned to cook mostly out of necessity. Being an adventurous eater or trying new things was not rewarded. Foodwise we did go from strength to strength. I can't blame my mother too much. She learned from her mother who was quite possibly the worlds worst cook on the planet. Everything she made was horribly over cooked, under seasoned, devoid of any herbs or spices (NO exceptions), and smelled like death.

The worst part was that they didn't think they were bad cooks. My grandmother would "roast" a piece of beef because my father supposedly liked it. Her idea of roasting was to put it in a covered casserole and cook it until it fell apart. Then she'd exclaim that it was SO tender. I could tenderize a stone in that much time and under those conditions. They could screw up a pop tart and then they would relentlessly criticize any food from a restaurant as if theirs came remotely close in quality. When given a bunch of fresh beans from a garden, my mother would cut them into one inch pieces and boil them until they were a perfect match to the DelMonte cans that were supposed to of lesser quality because they weren't fresh. My mothers tomato sauce haunts my memories still.
