Eventually worked out that I have a bottle of Hakushu distiller's reserve and very nice it is -- fruity, sweet and fresh and very lightly smoky. Apparently it's a blend of a lightly peated and a heavily peated whisky (among others of course) but I'm not finding too many peat flavours so I don't know what that's all about.

Scotch/whiskey of the day
Dalwhinnie 15 seems to be a lot nicer if left for a while. I wasn't overly impressed by it when I first bought it but it's really rather nice now.
I think that the next bottle I buy myself will finally be an Ardbeg.
Tempted to try another bowmore soon, too -- anyone had the 15 year old?Last edited by PigHog; 05-30-2014 at 07:58 AM.

I find it has many different flavors: citrus and heather that develops into caramel and finally ends with a medicinal flavor. The thing is, none of the flavors are particularly strong. This is my first blended Scotch so I am not sure what to expect but it does remind me of entry level offerings from Glenlivet and Balvenie I have tried.

I might get something a little more pricey next time, as my mum offered to go halves on a bottle of corryvreckan. (Either that or I'm looking at a Kilchoman 2008 single cask release, or perhaps an HP 18 (islay's more her thing though)).

Scotch/whiskey of the day
Anyone here a member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society?
It's crossed my mind to join but what do you actually get for your money, apart from access to often still expensive SMWS bottlings and stuff?
EDIT: it looks like £122 (£60 annual renewal) to have access to unique single cask bottlings that appear to be £45 at a minimum, plus access to tasting events (at cost) and their quarterly magazine. Is it really worth that amount of money?Last edited by PigHog; 06-06-2014 at 11:16 AM.
