I also enjoy Rick Wasmund's Copper Fox single malt. It's distinctive, and quite enjoyable despite being young; and it's not expensive. Unfortunately, it can be hard to find here in Virginia.
The Balcones products aren't available in the Commonwealth (damn you, Virginia ), but SWMBO has a friend in Texas who is supposed to be getting me a bottle of the single malt. I've heard so many good things about it (Wizards of Whisky named it their 2014 Whisky of the Year and World Single Malt of the Year)... I can hardly wait!

I finally opened that Glenlivet Nadurra last night. That thing is strong!, but it tastes great!

Thanked: 6I would agree - you can definitely taste that it is young, but it still tastes good. Hard to believe it would be difficult to find in VA, however I believe it! Have you visited the distillery in Sperryville? That is where I picked up my bottle. Had a tour of the facility with Rick himself. Nice place.
As for the Balcones, I will be picking up my bottle out of state during my travels this weekend. PA does not offer it either. I feel your pain. I am also looking forward to trying it out!

Yeah, you would think that a Virginia product would be more available in Virginia, but not all the V-ABC stores keep it on their shelves, and those do it often have minimal inventory. You can special order Wasmund's, but that's a PItA.
I'm jealous! I won't be getting my Balcones 1 for a while yet. Enjoy!Last edited by Dzanda; 04-16-2014 at 02:51 PM.

I'm having a new to me Single malt this evening.
A friend recommended it, and I must say it is a pretty darn fine dram.
Douglas Laing's Old Particular, distilled at Macduff distillery.
Cheers!Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanked: 36That looks pretty awesome, I'm yet to try an independent bottling of anything, although I've got my eye on a few. I'm curious, did you get it in your travels or at Vinmonopolet? If it was Vinmonopolet did they have it in stock of did you have to order it? The local one here doesn't usually have a very big selection in stock.

Thanked: 36Cool that they stock it. Ours has improved their selection in the last few years, but it's just not a very big shop. I think they only had three single malts the first time I went in there, but they've got more than ten now. Still not a great selection, but at least it stops me impulse buying too often.

Yeah, that is a good thing I guess
Still, Vinmonopolet, imho, has improved greatly over the last few years with a more customer based focus, rather than just being a state governed brake disk on our freedom to choose what we drink.
I suspect it really depends on the staff at each place though.
At my local place there are really knowledgable and helpful employees that tries their very best to get the customers what they want.Bjoernar

Thanked: 36I agree. The staff at my place are very customer focused and friendly, and are quite well trained. Only one of them seems to know anything about whisky, but they do their best. I ordered a bottle of cask strength springbank a month or so ago and they couldn't tell me much about it, but she saw the name of the importer and immediately got excited. She said they she doesn't really know whisky but that importer brings in the best wines and they never bring any rubbish in. They're the ones who imported your bottle of Old Particular by the look of things. I think one of the staff there knows whisky, but only one of them and you never know when she'll be working. To be fair, if a town this size in England had a bottle shop as good I'd be quite surprised.
