Shumate's Barber
My dad got this in an auction pack recently. A Shumate's Barber in pretty good condition:
Need to send the blades out for honing but I'm really looking forward to shaving with this one.

I bought a razor that has scales like CommieCat's Barber, but it is marked "Schumate's Tungsten". On the reverse it is marked "Schumate Cutlery Corp" and "St. Louis, MO".
I don't know what to make of this razor. If anyone can shed some light on this razor's pedigree, I would appreciate it. Everything on it needs a good cleaning, and the steel could do with some polishing and a hone. It's not very pretty at the moment.

Thanked: 13245The Tungsten was one of the named series of razors from Shumate...
The idea was that there was actually tungsten in the steel, most likely this was like many of the other advertising gimmicks of the day, and it is doubtful that there actually is any in there....
There were quite a few razors that eluded to exotics metals in their makeups....
Still they are great shavers, like almost every Shumate out there..

My first and only razor I bought off eBay last week and shaved with it Wednesday for the first time. I like it. No blood......yet.
I have a box for an 012 that does not match my razor. I would be willing to trade it for an old strop or brush?
Thanks to you all for the great info posted on your forum!!!

For my college graduation, my uncle gave me this beauty. He got this thinking it was an Austin Shumate because that was marked on the case he found it in, but after looking on the blade, it was made in st louis.

I would love to have that box. I have several Austin Shumates with no boxes. Anyways, I finally had time to clean up and make some new scales for one of my Austin Shumates. I just honed it up and I haven't shaved with it yet, but The edge feels sharper than anything I own right now. Yes that means you, big Sheffields. Watch out!!
