See we start that stuff and the next thing ya know we will have to actually pay real money for these things...

Most of the old "Steels" are just hype, like the Silver, Tungsten, Damascus & Magnetic stamps on many of the old razors pretty much plain ole' Carbon or Stainless...

Welcome to the club but keep it on the downlow ok
Awesome I cant wait to get this little thing honed up and give it a go! Is the steel hard? I don't see many tungstens? Were there as many of these as other makes?

Here's my entry...a Shumate Pacific dated 1915-1920 in unrestored condition...only honed out a small chip.

    Count me in!

Just arrived today and took a sweet edge off the Nanis. Made me look like I know what I'm doing...

I've seen these scales before, but not this model. Add this one to the list of named Shumates.

This one is "Scout" in green-ish, gold-ish marble celluloid.

Nice ! I laughed really hard on this one.

About 6 months ago or so I scored a mint Shumate 30 off of fleabay for less than $10. I didnt think anything of it, really. Honed it up and man ... what a shave. One of the smoothest cutting blades I've tried.

In a class all on it's own, imho of course... but I can relate to that reaction, for sure !

I'd say the blade's 1/2 hollow (maybe 3/4?) and a 6/8 width. It's got a little belly to it. Because of that double concave I'd call it "sturdy."

Tomorrow I go for a full shave, but I was popping hairs for distance off the 12K earlier!

I agree with the Glen - this marks my 4th NY razor and they're all great shavers. I hadn't put 2 and 2 together until now, but my number 1 is a NY (Bengall "Blue Steel" from Hoffritz, NY). It may have just been dethroned...

    UPDATE:

The results of the shave test are in - but I'll follow the first rule of the SSS and go celebrate quietly in the other room. I figure in a shave or two the edge will really get into that sweet spot, otherwise maybe one or 2 laps on the CO strop. And to think this is my first full honing from bevel to finish... Loving it! That Bengall better not get comfortable in the number 1 seat.
