This is one of the simplest diagrams about Japanese papering of steel.

There is also a green paper but not common in cutlery.

A quick OT. About 16 years ago I purchased a very nice pair of pruning shears from Hida Tool and Hardware (see the above link). I still remember the owner sending me a personal note. It began, "Dear Bill-sama." Pretty cool.

I shaved with my Hayashi for the first time this morning and had a wonderful shave.

Definitely a fan of Japanese straights.

They are awesome shavers ,easy to hone. The history of the brand is hard to find simce it is all in Japan. May be one of our members that knows the language or lives there can dig up some information.

There is no real secret to rentetsu. It's basically wrought iron. It has a fibrous character from the silicate stringers and when etched gives a wood grain looking pattern. It's perfect for traditional cutlery as the smith would not have historically wasted good steel for the whole blade. He would have welded a "tooth" onto the wrought iron body, giving a hard edge to a soft backing material.

A couple of us had the great fortune to work with Yataiki when he came to the US a long time ago. He was especially happy with us because we brought some old anchor chain that he thought was some very nice iron to work with. His lessons were invaluable.
