Just take Your time. Nothing is running away. You can shave with a straight for the rest of Your life, if You like. And if You don't spoil it in the beginning, chances are high, You actually will. Hurry and Tiredness are no good companions to straight shaving, especially not when You, as a beginner, are nervous anyway.

Take it slow, start with easy parts like the sideburns or cheeks and as You gain confidence, start exploring more.

Thanks, that's good advice. I don't want to end up as the top contributor to this thread! May I propose the following malady?

    STRES: STraight Razor Exuberance Syndrome

Main symptoms: risk taking with extremely sharp pieces of steel and attempting to use willpower to promote hair growth.

Heck I'm just beginning my second week of daily use, my last nick was on Sat from running over a pimple I didn't see when edging out my beard. That being said - I have yet to end up with a cut, scratch, or nick that's taken more than a couple of seconds to stop bleeding. (*goes off to find some wood to knock on....*)

Well, if it's worth doing once it must be worth doing four times! That's why I don't care so much for spikes. Thanks for sharing!

i was just thinking my last shave i got my ear with the same razor ...lol.. i may have to mute that think a bit ...lol.. all my other spikes are older and must have just enough wear on them or had the point hit enough times that they dont get me .. this one had the factory ( or appeared to be ) edge on it and that point is just as pointy as can be ...lol..

You know now, that if you apply a tight tourniquet about 3 inches below that cut, the bleeding will stop.

Everyone: Sometimes Hirlau doesn't give very good advice.
