Manaslu M500 Nichiri straight razor, don't have a picture, didn't know how to save from the site I bought it from, but it's in Glen's hand right now so in a few days I'll be able to show it. Tc

This blade on this Japanese (western-style) straight razor is a super clean and shiny 6/8" spike point (with a slight nod to the French point), made of a very high end, high-carbon steel* in the classic Japanese 1/4 or quarter grind. The blade steel is the famous Yasuki White (#2) Specialty Steel (YSS2), which is the modern version of the ULTRA famous "Iron Sand" Tamahagane steel of old Japan. The carbon content is EXTREMELY high, which means it holds a very keen edge longer than most other steels. Plus, the Yasuki White Steel has a super fine grain structure, making it able to take a much finer edge than most other steels. This is a SUPERB straight razor made with an even MORE SUPERB quality steel.

If that's it or one similar to it, sounds like a nice blade with excellent steel!!!!

Got this ebay catch in today's mail. It is a J.R. Torrey Co. "156 - The Barber" model. It is a little hard to date but probably pre 1920 from what I can gather. I paid a little more than I wanted to but I got caught up in the moment, and I like US made razors - good ones, anyway. The seller "forgot" to mention that a previous owner had scratched his name into the scales and that the scales on the other side had faded to a brownish color. A couple minutes on the buffing wheel cleaned it up nicely. If it turns out to be a good shaver I might have it re-scaled.

Nice score! I edited this because I was trying to say to keep it as original as possible because of it's age.

sounds like those are hard rubber scales and if they are I would save them.

Oh , I came in to post something but the mailman showed up and so now it's not in the mail any more. And I did buy something that is a game changer for me but, they haven't shipped it yet. I'll get back to ya :<0)

    First and Foremost Nice Catch!

With that said, I wouldn't be too quick to discard those scales. #1 the 'scratched name' gives the razor some historical character and #2 the 'brown' can be brought back.

    See here:

    http://straightrazorpalace.com/works...id-scales.html

It's at least worth a try. As long as original scales can be saved and they aren't 'gassing' I'd hold onto them for historical value.
