Yeah, I know that's how a lot of people do with them. I have done it that way but I like to lay a stone on a countertop. It's not really for fear of cutting my hand which I have done by the way, but more to have a steady surface and allow for more steady stroke and steady pressure... Just for me. That's how I like to do it.

Since the 8K side of my Norton 4/8K has plenty of wear left but the 4K side is getting a little thin I picked up a Norton 4K.

It's grid lapped in pencil and soaking in water ready to be lapped.

Finally got a 32 in ivory. Only thing left I am wanting for the collection is a fili but wanting to shrink the razor collection some first before adding it.

I'm quite sure that this 4K will be providing service to someone else long after I'm gone.

Now for those who have questioned the 'Roughness' of the Norton 4K and how much is required to get to where it's 'Smooth'.

After applying a pencil marked grid I soaked the hone in plain water for about 2 hours and it finally stopped drawing water so I used a 120 grit wet and dry on a plate of 1/4" glass to start to flatten it and get to where it was smooth.

I swear with God as my witness it didn't take but about 8-10 circles and a couple of up and down laps and my pencil marks were gone!

So I reapplied the pencil marks and went back to the 120 wet and dry and they almost disappeared immediately!

I then reapplied the pencil marks and went to an Atoma 400 and the grid vanished again almost immediately.

By then the surface was very smooth and ready to have a razor get to know it..

I didn't have more than 8-10 minutes of lapping time on this 4K

The Norton 4K was my first "bevel setting" hone. Now I use the 1K green brick followed by the 4k Norton.
The Norton 4K is always reliable. There are faster stones but this one always gets me to where I want to go.
