Good day for me today- here is my first custom re-scale

ERN 5/8 wearing horn scales. The wedge is a repurposed .45ACP projectile

That is some very nice streaked horn. It looks pretty good. The wedge looks loose. It is a really nice first set of scales. My first couple of sets were a swing and a miss.

Not too bad for a first try.
I found to get the wedges right and looking good took me a half dozen tries. Work on thinning the scales down and beveling them some more next time. I shoot for .100" at the thickest. Takes time and practice but you will soon get it just right and will be amazed at what you did.
    It's just Sharpening, right?

Wedge is tight but I didn't understand the geometry. Will do better next time. Need to research wedges a bit more not as easy as it looks!

Main thing is making sure all is perfectly flat.
Dishing out the inside of the scales where the wedge sits helps with a tighter fit as well. It only needs done a little bit.
Karlej, did a very good tutorial on it, somewhere.

But leave a small amount of the wedge sticking out beyond the scales, then once alls pinned up, you can sand or file it flush to the scales. Then you can polish it all up.

We all started just like yours, but they always gets better. You'll see, you'll push yourself to get better n better.

    Caution though..!!
    It can become addictive. [emoji56]

Well on my way to a nice Christmas ornament then it snapped off. First time on the lathe since high school and I had fun so that's what matters. Allot to learn and better wood will be a help. Pics won't load so I'll share those later I guess. I also believe my tools though new could use a sharpening.

Mike, nice knife fix. Way easier than trying to change the edge profile. That's good thinkin.

Eric, it has been a really long time since I have been on a lathe either but I seem to recall tool sharpness being key to a great finish.
