Thread: What are you working on?

I've got my "drilling errors" filled with dust and epoxy, and I'm just waiting for the epoxy to dry. I had forgotten to collect the dust when I was originally sanding, but I was able to make some from a throwaway set of scales I had and a sanding attachment on my dremel. I appreciate the advice I've gotten here in regard to this process.
If anyone remembers my Tally Ho scales from a few pages back, one side is mostly black and the other is a honey horn. I wonder if the one half had been dyed at one point? The honey horn color revealed itself after I started sanding.
Anyway, I might try using hair dye like I saw here recently to get them matching.
I've got my pinning supplies from ajkenne (great service) and also some neatsfoot oil. These scales should be ready to pin shortly.
Is it common for scales to be cut in a way to make a wedge unnecessary? These were done that way.

Your a better man than me Jameson!
I couldn't possibly read this entire thread. I tried before. It's just too long nowadays. I wish there was a way to condense it. What I did, in the beginning, was to find a good post I wanted to remember and copy and paste it into a file on my computer. After a while, I started deleting some of those as I learned them and made my own file with a header and my own words explaining how. This way I could find the info quicker and it was shorter. Good luck reading it all. I too read slowly so I feel your pain. But welcome to the thread and when your ready post some pics. We will be happy to help get ya started. Just don't expect to be knocking them out like Machinegun Mike. He has some magic dust or something that allows him to knock them out 3 times as fast as others do.
Mike, I will give the collarless a try. I got some junk scales I can play on. If I don't like it I will go with the small cup collars. I will get some time today to get this finished up. Will post a pic later. It's just Sharpening, right?

Sonny, there are cut that way sometimes. It was just another way to go about it. I've found it on molded plastic more often, but on horn too.

Thanked: 4827Sonny, they used to dye a lot of the scales black, so matching them was not an issue. I’ve seen a few like that too and hair dye is a viable plan.

I've tried to read the whole thread too. Think I've finished maybe 90%. But my brain doesn't hold little details so I've got a few pads of paper that hold key info. Though the organization is not great, I really like having those books of SR workshop knowledge.. those books are special to me.
The wedgeless scales are not a favorite of mine as I like having a wedge in there.
Jerry that popsicle stick suggestion is a good one, but with your experience, I would assume that you will have no problem.“You must unlearn what you have learned.”

I found and remembered that the pins were a bit bigger than standard when I took it apart. After trying to pin Collarless, I found it was just not going to work with the bigger holes. So I used the Cup Collars. I did pin up some old scales collarless, so I now know its not too hard to do.
I'm not as happy with the finished product, but its finished beside going to the stones. It's not bad, but I was hoping for a bit better fit and finish. It's hard to compare and keep up with Outback and Tom. But I will keep on trying.

Its been a all dayer, here at the workbench.
Started the day with MikT's Never Dull. Wasn't going to be able to clean the dirt out of the little cracks, inside each pin hole, so I ended up making some small SS domes, for collars to hide the cracks n dirt. As well, I dismantled Mikes 9/16 Klas Tornblum, Rattler. Gave it a good cleaning with 3M, polished the scales, and pinned up with small SS domes, and Nickle Silver rod, and both were honed.
The highlight of the day was finishing MrZ's last two. A couple of beauties, needing no more than a clean up around the pivots, and some polish.
So we start here with the scales...Before.
After... With a 7/8ths. George Savage & Sons, and a 6/8 Wostenholms. Brass Frameback.
The Savage has been honed, so I'm heading off for a shower n test shave.
BTW...Thus is the first time this Savage has ever been honed.. So sweet..!!Last edited by outback; 10-08-2018 at 02:18 AM.
