Thanks Mike and Jerry-That Tru Oil has been on my list to try ever since seeing some of your previous work with it, Mike. I need to get some and move my old can of Formby's Tung Oil (not really tung oil, I know) to the back of the shelf for awhile.

I've got about 3 more blades I want to scale up while I'm on my paua abalone jam, then maybe do some more in horn or wood. It's nice not having to worry about a finish on the synthetic scales, but you do miss the organic nature of wood and some of the interesting possibilities for a beautiful hand-rubbed finish, which I love.

You do restore a shine and then true oil and then jubilee wax?

This is much different than the methods I've used, and it looks very good...
AND you happen to be Machine Gun Mike.. a lesson to be learned in your secret techniques of multiple round bursts... rapid fire!
If you mean the bare wood...600-1000, depending on the density of the wood. But even then, I still come in with steel wool, afterwards. Then Tru Oil, sanding lightly with steel wool between coats, and after the final coat. Then the Restor A Shine and Jubilee.

The "RING" is much less with this large piece of steel for hammering on. Thank God! And i get no ring out of the chuck. AND, id say that mounting the chuck has caused a little less ringing too.

Thanks for the hint on the magnet. I will give it a try. Every little bit helps. At least now i dont have to go out in the garage when i want to pin any longer.

Jerry, this is the magnet that my son removed several years ago from on old dilapidated computer. Believe it or not, it's all I can do to use both hands to pull it off of the refrigerator/using my fingertips/fingernails--it's usually just holding papers so I slide it and the papers over the edge where I can get some leverage and pull it off of the steel. Including the mounting piece it only weighs 1.5 ounces

Anyway it cut 99% of the ring from my RR Pinning Anvil but as I said I don't have any worries about the ringing so it's on the frig

I hope this is of some help.

Okay excellent thank you Mike! I'm writing that down and will try it out.

Okay and this magnet on the side of the anvil ... I'm like a dumb blond with a phd. Very gullible... and so I'm feeling like this must be a prank..

BUT! Now I'm telling myself that the vibrations would be neutralized in the magnet somehow ...
It's killing me you gotta tell if this true or a joke?

MikeT--You can ask anyone who knows me and knows me well and they will tell you that I don't Bull Shite--Period! Not when I'm trying to offer help. I've tried the magnet trick and it works--Plain And Simple.

As I said the tip came via a blacksmith and he used the magnet to keep the ringing down while he was doing demonstrations so that the people wouldn't have to listen to the ringing.

Also a note to those who would like to deaden the ring in their RR Anvils. Benz turned me onto a trick he learned from a Blacksmith who does demonstrations at a museum near him and that is to put a magnet on the side of the anvil.

I tried it with what must be an rare earth magnet my son took out of an old computer and by God, it does make a definite difference. With that said; I don't have, want, need nor desire a SWMBO so I don't have a magnet on mine. Let 'er RING
That old blacksmith and I traded a couple of secrets that day Roy. The secret I gave him was how to turn a heavy rolled up threshing machine flatbelt inside out with out unrolling it.....totally blew the poor guy's mind. Next time you visit I'll show you how to do it.

I think I got a pretty good deal on this. Seems awfully small to me for a scuttle, but I guess that was the style. I would have made it a lot largerfor more water and room to lather. Before and After

That is a beautiful piece. Not sure how well it will work, but should be better than nothing. Still, a fine looking piece to display if nothing else.

I may wash it and try using it as a mug just out of curiosity, but it will probably be display piece (when I have somewhere to display it).
