I'd be interested in the details of how to use the iron on the scales. I picked up an old iron but haven't given it a try yet...

Plug it in, set it on med high, iron your horn till its hot n flexible, like rubber. Flex it the opposite direction of the warp, some. Set a weight on top n let cool, repeat as necessary.
Make sure their dry before ironing, trapped water can boil n pop the surface of the horn. Don't ask how I know.Mike

Do you guys put a piece of parchment paper on top of the scale when you iron it?

I don't. Straight on the scales, till their hot enough to only handle bare handed for two or three seconds. You can toast the surface of honey horn, if you iron it too long.

Yeah, looks like Steve got away with it those celluloid scales? Nice Top Flight, Steve!
Been a while since I saw an OCD razor. Bob quit making, I understand.
Never could convince him to smile that edge!

JMO But I think I would prefer a smile on that one too.
Steve my phone has a terrible screen.. Is that wedge angled at all on the Top Flight?
Been seeing so many flat wedges lately, and the resulting affect on the scales, so I've been going through my blades making a group that need to have the wedges fixed or replaced..“You must unlearn what you have learned.”

Started work on another for MikeT. A Tally Ho with real nice patina. Gonna leave it this way.
Mike was concerned if the chips could be honed out without going into the etch. I looked at it several times, and decided to go for it. It did break through the very corner near the toe, but not into the etch itself. Still needs to go to the finisher, so that will wait till the original scales have been finished.

Hey hey! Alright!
Looks like she will be just fine. Good to know.
Most my SR are on the sell off list, this one I could not get rid of. The stamp is deep and clear, and it's my only nice Tally Ho, which for some reason makes it more desirable in my mind.. this may not represent true value, just like them.
Thank you Mike! I'm gonna have to find Santa Claus and make him give me the intel on your xmas list!“You must unlearn what you have learned.”

Thats a nice looking blade, Mike T.
I will love to see what Outback does for it after the scales. I think id want to keep that one too.
The ironing:
Is this done right on the face of the scales or on the insides meaning unpinning? Can it be done with the blade still on the scales, or complete tare down needed?
Can it be done to plastic/celuloid scales too?
I got a couple plastic scales that are really warped and id like to keep them.Last edited by Gasman; 10-18-2018 at 04:32 PM.

I unpinn and heat with the flat side down. As for celluloid..not a chance IMO. THEY ARE FLAMMABLE, BTW. I'll keep the heat lamp for that.
If ya can't get um flat Jerry, send um over for a trip to the beach.Mike
