Mine is 1 3/4 X 5 inches. 3 magnets under the aluminum sheet. A 1/2 strip for the spine to go against.



Making it wider with the grooves to hold the blade while working on the spine would be neat.

Mine is 4.5 x 3.5 in.
A couple of scrap pieces of wood shaped and sanded.
Magnets were from a big craft store called Michael's.

Another variation, aluminum helps reduce heating of the blade. Use tape on that surface to do the second side otherwise the left over magnetized crud on the plate will undo some of your shine when you do the other side.

Deep saw cuts allow work on the spine and tang, held in place by the other hand.

I do like the aluminum on top of the magnets. The tape gives you a fresh surface from time-to time as well. No doubt metal grindings and steel-wool fuzzies will hang on.
Takes some rubbing with paper towels to finally get it off.

I have a reft of the sheet aluminum, Josh. Send me your dimensions as you are done and I will cut you some. The aluminum duct tape is good as well.

Better yet! A new hardwood block with 3 different sized grooves.

Richard, that is a good point about protecting the other side from scratches. I'll definitely keep that in mind. I'll try to find one of those tape erasers. I just found a small tool for magnetizing/demagnetizing screwdrivers when looking for tape erasers. I'll see if it is large enough to pass a blade through.

Ya. Rare earth. I think my 3 are 1/2 or so in diameter. They were pressed into the wood, yet came out after a while. Goop has securely held them in.

TBH, I would not want more. We cannot demagnify our magnets, now, can we?
With the 3 in mine, it is sometimes sketchy to put thin hollows on and off.

The magnets are really strong. Best to slide them off, yet that will make scratches with the metal present. Things to think about and overcome!

Brother is suppyto be bringing a saw we can cut the RR tracks with so maybe I will get a little anvil while I'm there.

Mine is 1.5x3.5x5.5. The magnetic shelf alone is 1 1/4 wide and 3/16 deep. Two different width cuts are for working on the spine and tang - one deep and wide one for monsters, and another narrow one for regular size razors.
For magnets I ordered this set, and used them all. The metal is stainless steel.

Nearly got these bolsters flush.


Jewelers loupe, burnished tungsten scraper, lots of patience..

Think I’m ready to peen. The last little gap should draw in nicely.
Due to the bolsters presence I think I will forego collars..
Should make for a clean finished job.
