Also, My pains for the bone scales I saved isn't working out. The blade I was going to use is warped. Have to rethink that one too.

Rounded up some blade candidates out of my old Sheffield drawer to try in my silver scales.
I seem to have way too much of this stuff.....

A sharp chisel works much much better.

I've got a router but have never used it. Maybe tomorrow I will go buy the right bit for it and give it a go. Guessing a board clamped down to run against would be best? I dont know if I'd try the chisel again Shaun. I just break wood with them. Maybe I should look up some vids on how to use my router.

They are easiest to use against a fence for sure. For a nice cut on the surface I use a spiral down cut.they are all kinds of tricky jigs you can make but for a one of box, a couple of clamps and a guide board is all you need.

So, I thought I'd clean up a couple razors before breaking out the stones. One is a D.D. No1 and the other is a Hibbard Spencer, Our Very Best.
Original scales on both. I took the Spencer apart, cleaned up the scales and blade a bit. There was a little rust and devil spit but most came off. Repinned and now ready for the stones.
The D.D. I just tightened up and cleaned with scales on. I will put them both on the stone in a few.


I need to work arounf the pivot a little more on the D.D. but its good enough for the stones.

There are many kinds that will do the job but the spiral down cut will leave the top edge nice and crisp.

Allright. Drug out 3 old Sheffields this weekend. The Wade and Butcher in the middle fits my scales perfectly. The upward angle of the tang has the pivot hole close to the middle of the blade in a straight line. The other 2 have the heel hanging out the bottom due to the higher pin-holes.
Hard to find combos when you need a little more 'banana' in the scales.




The silver collars on this one may also look nice with the silver scales.



Next to remove the blade and check the weight.

So all is looking good. Blade mock-up with thin brass spacers has the scales responding nicely to the taper in the tang, despite lack of taper in the wedge.
This old blade had been reground as is evidenced by some light 'plunge' marks on each side ( about where the toothpick is pointing), as well as some nice, even grinding striations on the blade faces.
They got it pretty darn hollow, so I will go minimal on the blade.



The silver collars were saved. I will 'redome' them a bit and use a few of Babur's collars at the top to take up some slop and provide the under-collars there.



Last bit of good news is the blade is a bit heavier still.



Looks like I have my 'kit' assembled.
Now to get to work..
