Sometimes, I do as Shaun suggests, hone it on a 1k with no tape to even things-up, sand lightly and polish and set the bevel with 2 layers to see if it is more uniform. If so, down to 1 layer. Works pretty well for me. The low angle can straighten the spine and the top of the bevel a lot at times.

Thanked: 15Update on the "shaving kit/vanity box" project...
1. Randomly found a nice box on amazon..I can't believe I've been looking at crazy expensive humidors. The box is actually not THAT well made, BUT that kinda adds to the whole "vintage and beaten up" look.
2. FINALLY managed to clean the bottles that came with an old vanity box I'd bought, I couldn't get the lids clean but after much searching I found lids that fit.
3. I'm actually thinking of sticking some velcros on the bottles so they don't move around (other side of velcro on bottom of box).
4. Maybe someday I'll either make one or get a nice solid wood box MADE...
Outside:
Inside: Top to Bottom, L to R: Small magnifying Mirror (top/lid), Board Strop, Swaty Barber hone, preshave/postshave oil (black cap), cologne (blue cap), facewash, shaving soap/cream, inner lather bowl, silver brush, Case for the Norris Twins)
The razor "case" actually fits in there really oddly and kinda "wow this seems made for it", the bottom 1/2 inch of the box is actually WIDER than the rest of the box all around, the walls get a bit thinner there...so it literally just goes into a little groove right below the latch.
The case currently holds it's originally intended occupants - the norris twins.

The case looks fitting for your use.
Perhaps a search for some vintage bottles that use corks along with some jars using the same method of sealing might be more 'retro' Just a thought--Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 15Oooh i found those on amazon too. "vintage style apothecary jars". Hmm good idea. There's enough space for some small/medium sized jars in there (i hate that amazon is so useful btw). Those bottles ARE vintage btw, god alone knows HOW OLD, but vintage nonetheless.
btw what do you think of the idea of sticking some velcro around the place. The fit is fairly tight so the only things that really move around are one of the tubs and the milk glass thingi.
Sidebar: isopropyl alcohol is bloody MAGIC.

Thanked: 4827That box came together quite nicely. I am lucky and unlucky at the same time. Amazon does not deliver here unless you want to pay a ridiculous amount for shipping and prime is of zero value. It is a good spot to find small suppliers of unusual things though.

By the picture you posted I am presuming that your 'Norris' razors were from Samuel Norris who's operation was making razors fro 1795-1815.
IF you are indeed trying for a recreation of a period correct storage unit then the more modern plastic caps and the either aluminum or SS lids might be a bit out of place. In that case some older pieces would make a really nice unit.
IF you aren't trying to have a period correct unit then you have a fine unit. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 15actually that's a fair point, my eventual plan IS to find smthg good (the plastic just looks out of place anyways). I'm certain I could find just corks that fit, the two bottles seem standard size (a lot of stuff in my bathroom fit). Did "atomizers" exist back then btw?
Speaking of which, it's not like ppl had veclros and stuff back then, did stuff just jostle around in vanity cases ? (I mean there are gonna be some tight fit compartments but things would still jostle around, given some of the vintage pics/recreations i've seen).Last edited by Tjh; 09-05-2019 at 01:16 AM.

A friend here at SRP gave me his mother's recipe for 'Bay Rum' aftershave/NO it didn't use the true 'Bay Rum' leaves but the common cooking leaves.
I dug around online and found this as a tribute to the family recipe as I found it 'fitting':
As far as 'Securing thing's' NO there wasn't any Velcro or such/however they knew how to SEW! I would presume that they would sew either cloth or leather strips to tightly hold things in place much like an ammo belt would.
I do hope this has been of some help. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.
