Thanked: 3215I never understood the pyramid theory, why would you go backwards?
Just set the bevel, remove the previous stria with each grit in the progression and try to get the edge as straight as possible with each stone.
The trick with the Norton 8K is lite finish laps on a clean, smooth stone and a linen strop, finish on leather.

started out honing with the pyramid method, i suppose it works but it didn't work for me. Took some lessons from several people and what it boils down to is the proper pressure and a correct bevel set. After that it's like you said, remove the stria after each stone. remarkably fewer strokes than with the pyramid method. JMHO

I get that the pyramid seems totally counter-intuitive. I think that the perceived advantage for a rank honing newbie learning mostly on the internet 10 years ago as many of us were was that you could sort of "sneak up" on a great edge going back and forth like that. I think everyone quickly abandoned it as they learned more fundamentals, (and more importantly-I think lost their fear of honing-1 good meetup will do that!), and obviously it has fallen out of favor over the years.
There are many roads to sharp.

Back then, we had very few choices of hones at a fair price. The 1k,4k,8k, were affordable and available. Natural stones were found by searching antique stores and garage sales. There even was active disdain for them by some 'authorities.' Cotecules and Thurigers were slowly getting into the act and so followed the Japanese and other natural's.

Thanked: 2209.
.
A guy named Bill taught the Pyramid Method to Lynn Abrams.
Lynn shared it, in pieces, over on the original Yahoo SRP forum.
I finally collected all the pieces and wrote it up. Lynn eventually put his name on it.
The intent was to help people with absolutely no sharpening experience get a start with honing a straight razor.
It was a long way from perfect but it was at least something to work with.
Remember, there were no video's at the time on any platform.
There were no razor meets anywhere and darn few "one on ones".
Thankfully, with the efforts of all you guys, past and present, we have come a very long way.
Thanks to all.Last edited by randydance062449; 03-25-2020 at 04:17 AM.

Now you're going to bash the way I hone? Suit yourself. I get exceptionally good edges with it and by the way I do know how to hone so ...whatever
By the way, have you ever tried it?If not maybe do that before you open your mouth.Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend. PR 27:17
