I just don't feel like honing tonight.
Jerry, I'm no honing expert, and I'm sure everyone has struggled with heels and toes on certain razors. In addition to Marty's taping regimen, one thing I do that I may have seen on a video somewhere is just, as others suggest, just do some heel-forward back and forth strokes on your bevel-setter to slowly bring that heel in line (or the toe too as needed). Of course then even out with x-strokes. You may have to do this with progressively lighter strokes all the way through your progression. And maybe try torquing the heel slightly in your stropping stroke too? I know you guys are like me: you want that edge shaving all the way up the curve if possible!

Oh, and beautiful work, Thaeris-your designs are totally unique!

Well, I just prematurely shut down my online office hours for the next week, as I think even my AP students have abandoned my online ship for Spring Break lol!

So anyway, I've got this set about ready to put together. It's my 1st time using black canvas micarta. After a few times going up and down the grits trying to get all the fiber matrix polished to a nice sheen and not showing, I finally gave up. I almost had it one time, then polished it a little more, and they came back in spots-D'oh! Screw it, it's micarta-you're supposed to see the fibers, right?!

I was going to put a Genco Wedge in this set, but I completely effed up my 1st bluing job. After about 10 light coats and steel wool buffing, it looks like a blind monkey botched a color case-hardening job-just a crazy quilt of colors on the spine. Back to the drawing board! (translation-I'll come back to it later).

Plan B.: I had a nice Boker blade that will fit the length and profile perfectly. Add in a black acrylic wedge and silver collars, and I think it might look pretty good. And it's a Boker, so I know it will shave! I'll probably pin it up in the next day or two.

Thanks for the tip Aaron. And those fancy 3 piece scales look very nice Thaeris.

I finally won on this wedge. It beat me badly for a while but in the end, I got it. I went to Two pieces of tape and started back at bevel set so I didn't have a double or micro bevel. Then after that not pulling the heal into the keen side I added one layer of Kapton tape on top of the two layers of Super 88. After going thru all the steps the toe was nice and the heal was starting to come around. I put a little more time on it and stropping then back to the stones and it got a little better. I got as much as I figured I was going to get with it and stropped it.

OK, It was better but still not as good as the toe. After figuring it had beaten me I went up for my shower and shave. It shaved but not as well as I thought it should. Disappointed I went back downstairs and did some more stropping. Then broke out the Boar strop. I don't use it too often as its vintage and I'd like it to out live me. After 100 laps on the boar, it was popping hairs on the heal. Still not as good as the toe but close enough for me to call it done.

I guess I will use 2 layers of tape on my wedges for now on even if it does bring the angle up a little bit more than I like. I can't wait to give it another test shave.

Here is a new one for me. The blade was sent to me by one of our fine members, And the scales I salvaged a couple of years ago then sent them to Outback for a quick going over. Thanks to both of you! Here we have a Griffon XX 60 Carbo Magnetic Trade Mark. With a name like that its got to be special. It is bellied or double beveled??? I have a couple of razors ground this way now.

The markings on the blade are very shallow so I don't think I can do much with that to make it show better.

I can't answer your question but it is indeed a unique grind.

I had a Carbo Magnetic but not in that grind but the blade was magnetized.

Love those Carbo-Magnetics! Is the steel truly different, or was that just marketing hype?
