I also thought the stone might be the issue. I flattened it with figure 8 passes of a 1200 atoma slurry plate before each honing session and grid lapped it with a granite flattening plate to 400 grit wet/dry three times. I'm pretty sure it's not the hone.
Probably my biggest frustration has been wondering if it's me, my equipment, or the blade. I'm pretty sure I've eliminated my equipment so it's either me or the blade.
If nothing else, I'm getting a lot of practice with circles, wiper strokes, rolling X, X, and straight strokes. I've been switching up just to keep myself entertained while hoping the steel starts taking an edge.
This blade had some apparent grinder marks when I got it. I've been a little concerned about the heat treat having been messed up, but I didn't see any discoloration and the initial bevel seemed OK. Then again I didn't really max out the initial bevel.
I keep hearing Euclid's "voice" as I hone...it's done when it's done...
This blade has been frustrating and I may take a tactical retreat, but I'm not quite ready to give up on it.O'Toole's commentary on Murphy's Law: Murphy was an optimist.

Sometimes a tactical retreat is helpful for me in general. It seems I have the most eureka moments after I set it aside for a bit after reaching an impasse. Speaking for myself at least.

I made another Pen this weekend. The Wife says this one is for the Holiday being Orange. It's a twist to open and a little shorter than standard...
I made another one with Cocabolo but it's put away. Different kit. It's just Sharpening, right?

Oops. Damn phone. I also had to replace the battery in my car. Those ain't as cheap as they used to be. Mowed the yards and cut down the bushes for the season. Time to go back to work so I can rest. Lol.

Good call on going up to the 4K. Spent a little time with it last night and the larger chips are almost gone. I should be able to finish off the 4K tonight and maybe move up to the 8K. Hopefully, I can have it ready for a test shave this weekend.

I had a few minutes so I wanted to try out some wood I got for free from my neighbor, and to try making what is called "The 12 cent Pen". It's passable for a first try but I need to do much better the next time.
Does anyone have any clue on what this wood might be? It was given to me as a split log about the diameter of a telephone pole and 3 feet long. Looks like a chunk of a telephone pole with no tar on it. HEAVY!!!
BTW, This pen is just the wood turned and drilled out then a Bic pen insert installed. The throw-away pens you see everywhere. So for another dime, a new insert can be put in when it runs out.Last edited by Gasman; 10-13-2020 at 10:20 PM.

Thanked: 4828That pen actually make me think of magic wands, that could also be pens. Could be a hit with the Harry Potter crowd.
