Can't say what it is but it looks totally badass. If it's really dense and heavy it could be some kind of hickory like an ash for instance. Ash has a really blonde color with a dark grain.

Hickory? I guess that's a possibility. I will have to look it up. Thanks for the idea.

As far as drilling the hole, I used a 1/8" by 6" drill bit chucked up on the lathe in the tailstock. Set up my wood in the jawed chuck and let the machine do the work slowly so to go straight. Then turned the wood from a round blank to the shape. I made the wood round to start with so I wasn't working with an odd shape to drill or turn. Hope that explains it.

There is another piece I didn't make. A holder/mount. It's Like a large round drawer pull with a magnet that holds the mount to a fridge or whatever. And a hole drilled through its side so the Pen sets in the hole but doesn't fall through. As you can see there is no pocket clip.
Or you can just drop it in a pencil cup as I do on my desk.

I'm thinking these will make great low cost Christmas Gifts.

After looking at a few hardwoods and the idea that this was used as a support in an old addition to the guy's house, I'm leaning toward white Oak. Still, I'm just guessing. But it could be Hickory too. Hard to say.

Can one of those be made as a mechanical pencil? A set of both would be cool.

A Mechanical Pencil could be made from this wood but in a standard kit type. What I made has no hole at the top and the tinyest hole just for these throw away inserts. But there are lots of kits for pens and pencils.

I love the cocobolo pen especially, Jerry-one of my favorite woods. I'll be turning a set with it soon to include a shaving brush, and I've been turning some pens lately in desert ironwood and lignum vitae. I wish I didn't love these super-hard woods so much.

By the way, do you use negative rake carbide cutters on acrylics?

Just the standard cutters Aaron. I've been trying to get used to my Skew more lately so I've been doing most with it. I don't have a big monster size like you. I have a large and small skew. I still need more work but I ran out of energy and time this weekend. Maybe.

I figured I had enough time to try a little something new. After i cut out my blank it took me about an hour to make this. It was the first one and Im pretty happy about it. Looks like another item to add to the list of Christmas gifts...

I even managed to get the wood grains to match up.

A lot of people don’t know, but you can hide weed in there!

It's called a box! I'm not too sure about the weed tube but I guess it could be. I'd put toothpicks or emergency meds in one if I was to use one. Weed? That was a long time ago!

BTW, It's 3.5 inches deep and 1/2" wide inside. 4.5 inches by 7/8" outside.

    Good for Razor parts too.
