Thanks for all the sympathy and helpful suggestions. I was thinking about all of those suggestions. Just still not done hopping yet.

I have been meaning to get a good silver solder set up for other purposes. I do have a wire welder with a gas bottle. A weld might be preferable but needs great care. Still weighing my options.

Thanks Nipper. Thanks John. I've never used silver solder and have no concept of how strong it is. I have done a fair amount of pipe sweating and wire soldering but never really anything like this so I just have no concept of how strong or how aesthetically pleasing it is. Welding is good and strong but can be a little ...rough... uncontrollable??? I've got a bunch of junk blades which I might practice both on. I have an embarrassing amount in this Crookes so I don't want to screw it up.

You might be able to hide the repair with a TIG slightly more.
If you have soldered the silver solder isn't much if any more. Just a litle higher temp.

I kind of feel like the solder would be easier to make clean and neat. I can get a nice clean joint with sheet metal. My concern was more how strong the bond is. Most lead based solder isn't very strong so I have a hard time shaking that notion.
I'm not set up to do TIG but I have heard some MIGs can be converted. Mine already has the gas setup so that's a plus.Iron by iron is sharpened, And a man sharpens the face of his friend. PR 27:17

Thanked: 4827I have a welder that does TIG mig and stick. I have not played with the TIG. I have done a small amount of silver solder. It will hold bandsaw blades together, so it’s strong. Tom and Andrew both have razors that have silver soldered tang, that came out neat and have stood up. If you don’t have any experience with silve solder, it may be a good time to reach out to someone and farm the job out.
P.S.
Don’t pick me I am far too amateur. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!
