I concur my friend! I religiously start with 3 layers of 3M #700 on Near Full Wedges. You can always take a layer or two off if things are ok.
I will note that for years I used the cheapie made by the C. H. Ina Company electrical tape but after trying the 3M 700 I'm sold! Way Better Tape! It doesn't wear through anywhere near as easily and it's slightly thicker.
The only downside (if you can call it that) is that it can leave black tape residue. The solution is to use the tape you just removed to pat down on the residue and it will come right off.Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Here's what I'm working on. What's more fun then replacing fuel injectors? Changing fuel injectors twice because your replacement parts didn't work.

Its been a little over a month since receiving these two wedges from Johntoad. Haven't had much time to spend on them as usual, so its been slow progress. But I finished lightly sanding the blades, leaving a few pits and wear scars (character). Only reason why I sanded them was to change the sanding marks from heal to toe, to spine to edge. Now I can start on the scales. Decided on Black n White Ebony, instead of Birdseye maple.

Put in a new FP regulator in there. Never had to replace injectors, but have replaced a PILE of bad regulators in those!
Makes them dump gas!

I've cut one set from the block that I made this set from, but they look darker, and more grainy. But I won't know for sure, till I sand them. It smokes a bit when I'm cutting them, (hard stuff) so it tans the wood a little. Even a brand new blade..it smokes. So I cut slow, with frequent stops, before the oils in the wood start bubbling, and your 1/8" piece warps in front of your eyes, as it cools.
Yep...learned the Outback way.

I'm trying to decide how much I care about cleaning this one. Reground to quite hollow, so there isn't too much meat to play with. But I really love a big blade in thin scales. The scales were kind of weirdly sized, in that they need a razor with a long tang but short blade.

Hit it with some steel wool and never dull with cr/ox. Should clean it up a treat, but leave some character.
