Thanked: 4827I typically shape them taped together. If it is a one of set of scales I start with the blanks glued together. Gluing them together is simple. Blank-white glue-card stock-white glue- horn blank and clamp firm until dry. I then cover with masking tape tape out my shape and rough cut, typically between an 1/8 and a 1/6 from the line. I use a coarse wood file to get in very close and then finish with 120 glues to a piece of wood. It gets both of them shaped together. After I have all of my shaping and sanding done they separate with a little warm water and the glue and paper comes right off.

Thanked: 3215Nice looking horn. It is much easier to shape with the scales glued together, I use scotch double stick tape from the dollar store, a couple pieces will hold it together well. Taping or gluing also ensures your holes are straight, in line and that the scales match.
It is also easier to hold a thicker piece.
It appears you tang pin holes are a bit off center, could be the photo.
Now is the time to fix that, just take a bit off the one side, to center the hole. You want your tang end of the scale thinner and narrower anyway, especially if you are going to use a stepped collar.
Here is a good post on making horn scales. How to make a traditional set of horn scales ... the way I do it.

I had them stuck together when I drilled the holes. Correct the wedge end hole did come out off a bit. And my tang end is thinner. I started shaping them stuck together and thought I would have an easier time if I separated them which so far the 1 went well enough. Always learning thanks guys I'll see later about correcting the hole in the wedge end.

Thanked: 4206And my first three results fresh out of the curing oven.
And the bottomside.
Hard and solid!
On subsequent cures I will crinkle the tinfoil to prevent the solid crust of cured stabilizer juice from hardening against the base of the wood.
These will now be molded up with some alumilite urethane to make some brush and scale blanks.

Thanked: 4827@ B52
Looking pretty slick. I am standing by waiting to see further progress. Feel free to burl it up around here.
@ cudarunner
That is some pretty evenly translucent horn. I have only had a few blanks that pure in the honey color. Looks great. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!
