Thanked: 250I noticed before I filtered my bay rum that there were tiny droplets of spice oils floating on the top of the liquid. I think when I filtered it through a folded paper towel that it took out the spice oils too. Maybe you guys can think of a better way to strain/filter the stuff and yet retain the oils.

I drained mine through a paper coffee filter and squeezed the remaining liquid out.
In cooking, aromatics are either bundled together or tied in a sachet of cheese cloth.Rog

Yes a sachet of cheese cloth might work but there again it might retain the valuable oils.
I was wondering if a piece of aluminum foil could be punctured with very small needles to form a 'sieve' of sorts. However I can see very small particles passing through.
Anyway the journey continues. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

4 large bay leaves.
1/4 teaspoon allspice. (3-5 berries)
1 stick of cinnamon.
Crack, not grind, the dry ingredients and wrap them in cheese cloth maybe? You wouldn't have to strain the liquid.Rog

Grinding the ingredients was my mistake, Roy. Mother Benz used this recipe and made it work.
When I get my bay oil, I will try the recipe again, this time without any cracking or grinding.Rog
