They are really purdy scales. I am always afraid of cracking wood scales while pinning. How many coats do you have on those?
It means "cats eye" it comes from a french word I can't pronounce :) tigers eye quartz
Chatoyance is the effect of light and dark areas of the wood grain giving the illusion that they are almost moving or shifting. A desired finish like the piece of gunstock below.

Ok. I see or understand. Im hoping for a lot of this illusion in the finish. Guess we will find out. I had about 6 coats on them but then the cat got up on my table over-night and got hair in them. So had to sand off most of the layers and start again. Prabably around 9 coats at this time. I'll do one coat before work and another after work. Going to have to put some 1k w&d to them in the next coat or two. Working my way up the grits. Guess when i hit 2500 ill call it quits. Thats with 3 coats or more beween sanding.
I decided to make my parents and my in laws a custom end grain cutting board for my upcoming wedding. They turned out so good I made myself one Too!
