If I may, I'd suggest you do a series of layouts on paper first so that you can compare them before you make a final decision. As an artist, I never start anything visual without a number of preliminary drawings that I can study and draw from each a component of the finished work.

That's a good suggestion, also you should probably sign that piece and perhaps the year, nice to look back on what your done in the past.

Thanks for the feedback. It is nice to hear from another artist.
I do doodle my pieces on paper within the confines of a scale outline. It is infinitely easier to pencil it in than it is to mark it into the bone. Part of my layout issues are about getting what I draw on paper to be transferred to the bone, and that is part of what i am trying to work out too. I am very new to drawing and carving and scrimshaw. I have been watching a lot of videos and slowly learning parts of the process. More doodling! Or should we say preliminary drawings.

Doodling is where the most creative solutions lie. Doodling lets you stop using your conscious mind, which is often the deterrent to useful solutions, so you can get at the formative section of your brain.

Rez that work is something to be proud of for sure! It is difficult enough to get what is in your minds eye to paper let alone onto bone. Keep at it Sir you are just gonna get more better :D
