Thread: What are you working on?

Not a bad idea, although extreme. If penetrant doesn't work, I will probably do something along these lines. However, I'll probably use my fridge and warm water.
I have an inkling that the parts are cast and that high of a thermal shock "load" to any impurity will booger it up good.

On mine the chrome has worn though in the piece that threads onto the actual steel and that the ring goes into and it's showing brass. I just unscrewed my piece and I see brass in the threads.
I just thought this might be of some help as brass and steel expand at different rates.
I do hope you can get yours apart and reconditioned. Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

Thanked: 4826Jerry I have never gotten a matte or satin finish that really made me go woohoo. I have used scatchbrite in the Dremel and 600 grit in strokes going in one direction only, edge to spine seems the best. I have tried going spine to edge but it is always scribbley on the spine. I also have done the 600 grit uni direction sanding and then in the vibrating tumble and gotten probably the best results. I have some dry 600 greaseless that I want to try crushing up and adding to my walnut shell. You will likely need to experiment a little.

Ok. Thanks for the input Rez. When i did the 600 greaseless i checked it out and the outcome really wasnt what i was looking for. Of course that was on the buffer. I was thinking of those sanding wheels that have many pieces of paper. Thinking rougher might be the trick then smooth it out a touch. Guess ill just have to play.
It's just Sharpening, right?

Thanked: 4826I forgot the other method I have used. 600 grit wet dry on a 2" sanding drum. Both with and without a follow up in the vibrating tumbler. I do like the softened look of the finish after it has a couple of days in the tumbler. My issue is getting it really even with no jiggles in the scratch pattern. I keep trying and at some point I will feel as though I have arrived.

Thanked: 4826Gross and cool all at the same time. Oozing glue always looks like such an awful mess.

Thanked: 2284I have this one, plus a brighter one in the clamps right now. They're a lot of fun. The first one I did was just random colors but these next 2 I've put a little more thought into.
I also have another all glued up that's pretty neat as well. Not sure why I enjoy them so much, but I do.Burls, Girls, and all things that Swirl....
