No they are actually a material on of the knife sites call "super naturals" it's basically natural materials suspended in a resin based material. This is giraffe bone marrow in blue... I have a really good feeling about how they will shine up

Just finished restoring this old Puma. Not looking for perfection, just presentable and shaveable. Look forward to test driving it later.

The seller gave me a full refund and told me not to bother return shipping the blade so I will still try my restoration tools and practice on this German blade.
Sold as slightly warped scales and unhoned I received this.
I separated the blade and tried to soften the scales in hot water on the stove in a double boiler.
The one side came back nicely, the other went right wonky and seemed to grow in length as it got thinner where the bend was at its apex.
The black washed right out of the material as well.
So, despite the significant hone wear I have breadknifed the blade below all the edge chips and put a bevel back to it and its actually quite a nice piece of steel still.
So new scales to be made still, but of what..
    Cheers.
Don't give up Mike, you're doing ok! It's easy to screw up some scales. I screwed some up I made one time....................all that work for nothing............oh well!

X2 I have a small drawer full of scales that are all broken. Most of them completely finished and broken while doing the final pinning. Part of the game...

Pulled up my boot straps, cleaned my wife's double boiler, and have ordered some horn and plastic blanks from robsbitts for more scale stock.
Trying to work a slab of mottled black/white ebony I have into something nice for the beau while I find a source for cold bluing compound.
Appreciate all the suggested tips, and experiences from others. Made five sets of scales now, and buggered up two along the way, so my average is 60% success rate.
Heck, better than my gpa in grd 9. Hehe. I got better at that when I applied myself too..
    Cheers.

Don't forget about Birchwood Casey Super Blue! Works great, easy and cheap. I see it at sporting goods stores.

Ever since I saw the bluing compound at LV, I've wanted to do a blade with it. Is there any problems with doing the entire blade? I'm thinking for hygiene reasons with the bluing chemicals. I suppose once it's done, the chemicals can be cleaned off and it should be fine, right?
