made some quick scales out of guitar pick guard material once but don't see why a scrap of some sort of counter top laminate wouldn't work too. (i still have some of that pick guard material if anyone is interested btw).

Here is one I did from aluminium. The aluminium came from a piece of scrap corner molding.

I am very happy with how they turned out except that the metal is easily scratched.

That sounds like an ideal material. I'm going to chop up the telecaster right now...

I had many comments about hanging them "upside down".

But the friction between the aluminium and steel keeps them closed without extreme motion.

I gave them to my son who still doesn't want to use a straight but maybe I should give them a go and see how my honing was in 2010!

I believe that it was Dave that came up with them fix . . .soften the finish with coarser compounds
like tooth powder or pumice scrubbing compounds.

Tim, wordering about the pick guard material. I played guitar years ago and i remember that material being pretty thin. Or is the stuff you have much thicker? You have peaked my curiosity.
    It's just Sharpening, right?

There's a company that formulated a similar cellulose material that available a few years back . . .it could be purchased in thicker sheets and many patterns. It was celluloid and rather soft.
I believe that Kirinite has replaced it for other uses. I gave the remainders of mine to an old time guitar repair guy.
