But then my guess is that even the most devoute person is afraid of death, of their existence ending. THis might be the reason that people as you say have an overwhelming desire to be remembered as a godly man. They don't want their existence to end. They hope god will be real, that he thinks they are godly, and will take their soul for heaven after death. Fear is a strong motivator.

That's it for me. I'm done with this thread. Keep digging a pointless hole in your heads if you like, but I'm going on to where I can do some good.

Well thank God X! I thought you were about to pop a blood vessel! Thank you for having the self control to know when to depart!

If this thread is getting under any body else's skin I invite them to follow X's example!
For the rest of you, if you see a point, lets forge on! I, however am not sure I see a point to this thread anymore, although I must say that we once again have shown that we can disagree and still act like gentle men, which only further proves my original point in the thread "Mans intelligence"

Thank you all for helping me out!!

Men like these can find justification for their actions anywhere! Which begs the question as to why, if there is no Supreme Being, that anyone would feel the need to justify anything they do? Who are they trying to convince anyways and for what purpose?
Certain men will indulge in everything to get ahead of the game, and murdering millions is not more than a practical problem to be solved, for those men.
But the things I listed actually had papal blessing and the support of the power structure of the church.

Just because it had papal blessing doesn't mean they weren't the sort of men I was talking about!

A lot of people will use this as a reason to throw out religion these same people probably have no problem with going to Germany! I am not making commentary on the state of religion or Germany, I am only saying that what happened in the past is not a reason to dismiss them in the present! you would not spank your child daily for something she did five years ago!

Of course not. I wanted to point out the following:
    - At a certain point in time, the church was a corrupted power imperium, insterested only in furthering its own power and weath by whatever means possible.
    - The people in power then had clearly not connection with God as I see it.
    - This means that the church has not always represented God.
    - This means that it is not a given that the church represents God at this moment.

If the people in the church represent God and try to carry out his message and serve him, then it is only because the people inside are doing that. Not because those people are part of the institution.

I don't say that the church is evil now, despite the fact that I don't agree with a lot of their policies. They are doing good things too.
But there is not reason why the catholic church would be the sole link to god, and not the church of mormons, or the muslims, or the jews,...
God is where you look for him.

A church is nothing more than an organization of people like you and me.
I don't need the church to be able be a religious person.

I cannot speak for Mark, obviously, but I think he meant that both the church and Germany have committed atrocities in the past.
If you reject the current day church solely for that reason, you should also not go to Germany because by the same reason, you should hold modern day Germany responsible for the Nazis.

I don't think this is a slur against Germany either. Lots of countries have committed atrocities in their past. I think Germany was just an example.

Of course, I might be wrong but that is how I interpreted it.
