An interesting read from an excellent journalist:
Patrick Brown: The vicious circle that is North Korea - World - CBC News
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

I know this thread keeps veering off of NK to Iran, but I think it's worth pointing out that many people in Iran, especially the younger ones, are very pro-Western/pro-democracy, and really want to openly embrace the modern world. I remember street interviews all over Iran not too long ago (on 60 minutes, maybe?), and an excellent article in Smithsonian a few years ago, that made these points very convincingly.
Unfortunately, the people haven't been able to shake off the mullahs who took over in '79 (which I'm sure we all remember), the recent (supressed) attempt at a nationwide demonstration notwithstanding. Sadly, if Israel (or God forbid, us) feels compelled to make a pre-emptive strike on their nuclear capabilities, all that will be for naught. I think it's important to point out that the Middle East is far from one monolithic culture. Unfortunately, it's a lot easier to get the world's attention with a hijacked plane or a suicide bomb than it is with the simple (but revolutionary) act of girls being allowed to go to school, or the recent US visit by the Afghan Youth Orchestra.

I'm truely impressed that a thread about world politics has lasted to page 16 without getting out of control and shut down. Every other forum I've ever been on wouldn't have faired this well at all.

Thanked: 3228The world has stumbled from crisis to crisis like forever, some real and some imaginary. The use of the word "perhaps" by the DIA in describing their estimate of NK's ability to strap a nuke to a missile does not make me inclined to sound "Hands to Panic Stations" just yet. I would hope all sensible precautions are being take by the concerned parties and it is now wait and see. Perhaps they don't have that capability, seems nobody really knows one way or the other. If everything goes for a dump just hope you are far enough away to say "What was that noise?". What else can you do, it is out of our hands.
