Well it's true I suppose, but it would at least make for a fairly humorous obituary (in the papers that would no longer be being printed)

I have a close friend and shooting buddy who is a heavy doomsday scenario feeder. He not only stockpiles ammo but has a bunch of loaded 223 mags (30 rnds) ready to go. Two ARs in case one isn't enough as well as a plethora of other weaponry. He has freeze dried food in case mere anarchy breaks out.

He has been this way for years and since I worked with him for 16 years, before he retired, I've been hearing this stuff for a long time. So I was always somewhat bemused by it because I thought it was sheer paranoia. Until the last couple of years. I can now imagine the situation deteriorating to the point where "we" may have to defend whatever provisions we have, at least for a short spell until martial law takes over.

Now I'm reminded of what RFK told his kids when the Cuban missile crisis was looming. If anyone is old enough to remember it, nuclear war was a real possibility. I was 14 and when I saw that grownups were scared that scared me.

So RFK's kids asked him why they didn't go to a fallout shelter/bunker. Paraphrasing, he told them that if nuclear war did break out the survivors would be the unfortunate ones. That is sort of how I feel about the aforementioned possibility. YMMV.

I'm with you on being being an unfortunate survivor, but I still couldn't "throw in the towel"...

We have been in a couple so called wars in the past 10 yrs, that will chew up a huge amt of material used to make even the rimfire stuff.
Since 911 and all the school shooting crap, police depts are utilizing huge amts of ammo just at the range.
You the casual hunter/shooter will be at the bottom of the pile as far as getting more.
Actually, there have been many reports of police departments having to trade with each other for certain types of ammo, as well as some even relying on the town's citizens to donate ammo.

As for the rising cost, there are obviously many factors that contribute to it, but stockpiling I'd say is the number one culprit... when demand goes up, so does the value. When the demand goes down, so does the value. It doesn't matter if it's your everyday Joe going to the range or DHS stockpiling millions or billions of rounds, the cost will change.

Agreed. I once heard it put this way: "If you have no clue how to swim, and all you can do is kick and flail your arms to keep above water, by all means KICK AND FLAIL!!"

Even the great depression didn't make the US society collapse.
Nothing wrong with being prepared, but some people are way too paranoid about it.

No rimfire yet in Minnesota. I was at a Gander Mtn this last weekend and the centerfire offerings seem to be more available. Maybe the supply overall is returning then.
