Well drat! I find myself having to come here and ammend my last statement. Spike took me to the Micro-Brewery tonight and I tried their "Black Lager". It tasted like Mocca not lager! It was actually quite nice.

As a general rule though I just don't like the taste of lager.

The Shcmaltz Bros. Brewing Co. of San Francisco makes a couple of good beers, one is Genisis and the other is Bold Messiah, reminds me of good dark german beer and is the only beer I'll drink. You wont find it on the shelves around here, you have to order it.

I find a lot of people lump all lagers into the same group. The typical mega-brewery offerings (Smella, Budweiser, &ct. ) tend to put beer lovers off. Try a well made Bock or O-fest, though. The lager yeast, long fermentation, and subtle use of hops really make a malty, tasty brew. Spaten, even though she has been assimilated by the InBev Borg, still makes some great lagers. The Optimator is a really good Dopplebock, and worth a try come lent .

Default I had a really good one last night...

I drank a bottle of Innis and Gunn. It is a scottish beer that is aged in oak for 30 days and boy could you tell. It was a well crafted Scottish heavy, amber in color and malty with that fantastic oak flavor that you find in chardonnay. It was about $10 bucks for a 25oz bottle, but it was worth it.

I was in Portland a couple of weeks ago with my brother and we went to the Deschutes Brewery restaurant. I got a chance to sample the Black Butte XX. The regular Black Butte is a very tasty porter, but they made a special higher gravity batch and aged it in oak. It was about the tastiest beer I've ever had. It also about put me to sleep as it's 11% alcohol.

Oak aged beer is very tasty

Any homebrewwers on here? I just made my first batch of wheat which turned out fairly weak but I'm looking for more recipes with a strong wheat flavor and higher ABV around 8-12%

The Duchesse is one of my favorites also!
You might try Rodenbach or Leute bock As these are fantastic, and on a par with the Duchesse!

Ah Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby! I remember having this at various beer festivals in the late 80s/early 90s and declaring it my favourite sup and I never normally drink mild. I thought it was called DArk Ruby Mild though. I'm really happy it's still going - must hunt some down! Apart from this, my regular favourites are from Theakstons and Black Sheep in Masham, especially Rigwelter and Old Peculier. I don't mind a Guinness but I've always preferred Beamish. Perhaps Beamish being 50p a pint in the Trent Poly (as was) SU bar has something to do with it.

Gawd I haven't been to Duncs for ages. I really like the Baltic Fleet as well.

As far as the 'is guinness a beer' debate goes, guinness is a stout and stout is a dark beer. CAMRA must be regarded as an authority in these matters (in the UK at least) and they list stout (along with porter) as a style of beer - Beer Styles - CAMRA Not that it's an authority on anything as such but wikipedia also lists stout as a type of beer - Stout - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
