Personal question to all. Apart from hunting why do people in the US have so many weapons? Is it for protection or just simply a hobby and, like razors, the more the merrier?
As a UK citizen the laws are very different so would be good to have an insight.

Self and family protection in times of increasing crime is one reason. Another reason for me and many others is target shooting. To use your analogy, like obtaining the perfect razor edge, some folks like to practice accuracy in target shooting. Personally, I get a lot of enjoyment blasting a little chunk of metal 500 yards and hitting a small target.

As collectors largely but a big reason is because we can. I would imagine that people in other parts of the world might have more if governments were not so restrictive.

One reason also that can't be overlooked is the frontier spirit which these days remains vestigially. American culture was founded on conquest and adventure and frontiersmen (and women) could not wait on military or law enforcement to arrive since they might not ever do so.

It also can't be overlooked that there are still dangerous large animals here that no longer exist in Europe and much of Asia. Although east Asia does have tigers and leopards many of the dangerous animals have been irradicated. In Florida we have black bears, alligators, crocodiles, large venomous and constrictor snakes, ferel pigs and even coyotes and panthers which can be dangerous and that's just one state. Out west there are mountain lions, grizzly bears and even large deer like moose can be very aggressive towards people in some cases.

As an example in certain times of the year when ferel pigs have young the sows become very protective and will attack humans. Since they have become so invasive you could be attacked by one even in your own back yard.

Actually for me it's a family thing. More of a tradition in my family. The family dymnamics introduce you to guns at an early age. I have guns from 1842 to the present that have been passed down from generation to generation. There's an expectency that you will continue the tradition to pass these guns to the next generation. I have a vast collection of Rifles and hanguns. 90% of them are antiques and I would never shoot them. They are relics from the past that formed this country into the nation that it has become. At least that is the belief.

When I lived in the cities I always CCW'd I stopped for about 15 years up here, but went back to it again ...
Best thing I ever bought was a Comfort-Tac holster, the name is not true :P the comfort part is very accurate but Tactical it ain't..

26 states have either passed or are passing what is erroneously called "Constitutional Carry" for you over across the pond that means in 26 states you do NOT need a permit any longer as a citizen of those states to carry a concealed weapon

We have that here, but many of my friends have a CCW permit anyway, it eliminates any red-tape when buying a new weapon.. we just flash our CCW and can skip most all the paperwork...

    Jumping Juhossefers!!!!

What did I just get done saying???

If someone not so enamored with guns saw the response to this question do you know what his response would be?

Well, let me enlighten you all and this is NOT my personal view by the way. I'm just being the devil's' advocate here.

"Well what bunch of gun nuts. It's just so easy to get guns in this country that's why we have 30,000+ folks killed, maimed, murdered each year. Statistics clearly show states with easy carry have a higher rate of murders. yea, most folks can't be trusted carrying. They have a bad day and guess what happens. You don't even need any training in these easy carry states. If they ever need to use the thing they would probably kill everyone but the intended target. We have all these mass murders, little kids being slaughtered and mental cases with easy access to guns......"

You see, this could go on and on and then you guys respond to this and we're right back to a "Gun Control" thread.

The proper response to this initial question should be- "There is no insight. That's just the way things are in this country. If you want to explore this more fully you can research it on on web and get the whole story and see all the opinions about it".

    GOT IT?

    Carry on shooters.

Not so sure why all the ruckus. I prefer people DO know I'm a right wing gun toting nut.

We all know you can make statistics say whatever you want. Ever think that maybe people carry because of the murders instead of the other way around? I work in a very dangerous job and I carry everywhere I go. I have had 3 instances where I would have been justified to shoot someone and 2 where I thought I would have to. It scared me to death. People get these images of old western movies but killing another person is NOT something that is taken lightly by anyone who can reasonably qualify for a permit.

    No rukus.

If you want the world to know, all the power to you but not on this forum please.

I was just making up an example of what could happen, not bringing up something for discussion.
