As a new beginner, I would recommend a MM Cob for a first pipe... They have some nice shapes, bowl sizes and if pipe smoking isn't for you, you haven't invested a lot of money in it...

Also, there is no break in period, all tobacco smokes well in them, there is no real science (stuff & puff) and you can customize them with a nice stem...
I will amend to Nosewarmer and SpacemonkeyJon. Cob for starters and your all set and damn the snickers and jeers from the nonpipers with their Frosty and Popeye cracks. When you start looking into Briars,I might recommend Vikiings as an option. They are very reasonable $50.00-80.00 range and plenty of choices. I started out mainly on them and they break in good and smoke well.

Cobs are great for smoking , too fast burn out if smoked fast .For a newbe i recomend something from wood that isnt so fragile .
I began with a pearwood pipe - Mister Brog and i still have some in rotation .
The question is what tobacco you will smoke - i know for shure that virginias or vapers are great for newbes - coins such as Escudo and Stockbue Bulseye flake are slightly toped vapers with a cavendish heart and they are good choise for beginer .

Always wanted to be able to enjoy cobs but never really have. Seem to smoke hot and wet. Have never found one with a quality stem.

Check around for a decent grade estate pipe from a quality place like smokingpipes.com. An estate (used) pipe can be had at a great savings over new and they will be cleaned and sterilized.

In my view, pipes are like razors, you get what you pay for. A quality pipe will smoke better than a cheap pipe that does not take into account the proper engineering.

On the other hand, if you find a ten dollar pipe that you enjoy, that's all that matters.

Well thanks for the good advise. I will have to go to smokingpipes.com and look around. I may have to get a smoking jacket to go along with it.

As a pipemaker i will advise you to get pipe in a price class fromm 50 to 100 dolars - there are wonderfull propositions from Saint Claude fabric , Comoy , or other french pipemaking fabrique , with traditions .
There are beautyfull buldog , billiards and other basic shapes with a colored acrylyc on a amazing prise 65 70 bucs .
believe me in those old manifactures they are masters of the series pipes at a low prise and wonderfull quality .
It will not be hand made Nathan King or Mark Tinsky or Tom Eltang butt still perfect smoking pipe .
    I houp you enjoy pipesmoking
If youre not able to get something on your taste or prise list , i will gladly PIF one new pipe .

So ahm sittin in a nice ol comfy rockin chair on a small porch on a cottage in an ancient Finnish lakeside forest. Smokin some McClellends bulk 2000 FMC in my Butz Choquin Diam rustic acorn. It's just turned dusk and a lone Chickadee is dee dee deein !

    Back to reality..............

I'm loading up the Butz Choquin Diam rustic acorn with McClellends Bulk 2000 FMC,it's Sunday night (my Friday). Sitting in my apt. in the big dirty city. Got the cat next to me and I just got done reading some useless drivel about a classy(NOT) fight between two MC's at the VMA awards. Har har. Life's a hoot !!
